The South African Communist Party (SACP) is saddened by the deaths of workers that occurred as a result of an explosion at Rheinmetall Denel munition plant near Somerset West. The explosion left eight workers dead on Monday, 3 September 2018. Benson Ngqentsu, SACP Western Cape Provincial Secretary visited the scene on behalf of the Party. He extended condolences to the families and friends of the deceased workers. The Party will continue providing support to the families and our comrades in the area of Macassar, Somerset West.

The SACP in the Western Cape called for an expedited, full investigation of the circumstances surrounding the explosion, as well as of compliance with the prescripts of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Further, the Party calls on Denel to provide counselling to all the workers at the plant and the families of the deceased workers.

"We commend the work done thus far by the Fire and Rescue Services Team", said Ngqentsu.
