One South Carolina Police Officer Dead After Several Cops Shot in Lethal Attack
Daily Beast

One South Carolina police officer was killed and at least six others were wounded during a shooting Wednesday afternoon when a gunman opened fire from inside a home where authorities were attempting to serve a search warrant, according to reports.

Maj. Mike Nunn of the Florence County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect, who has not been identified, was taken into custody following a two-hour standoff.

The shooting took place around 4 p.m. in a quiet subdivision in Florence, South Carolina.

“These officers went there unknowing the firepower this suspect had,” Sheriff Kenney Boone said, according to BuzzFeed.

“They thought it was a random search warrant, but when they arrived gunfire started.” In a tweet, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said agents from its Charlotte office were on the scene investigating.

Officials said three Florence County police deputies and two Florence city police officers were shot.

The officer who was killed worked for the city. A spokesperson for the city told the local ABC affiliate that some of the officers are in “serious” condition and that at least two of the officers are “touch and go.”

“This is simply devastating news from Florence,” tweeted South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster.

“The selfless acts of bravery from the men and women in law enforcement is real, just like the power of prayer is real.”
