WINDHOEK, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Namibia President Hage Geingob on Wednesday said his government has faced a plethora of challenges in its quest to achieve prosperity and eradicating poverty, although significant progress has been made in different sectors.
He was addressing the parliament on his fourth State of the Nation Address where he emphasized the importance of accountability by civil servants and all public office bearers.
"Effective governance forms the basis of our economic governance. As a result we continue to attach the principle of accountability to the operations of Government to attain set targets of prosperity," He said.
Geingob who is also the Chairperson of Southern African Development Community added that the continent has now achieved a new era of democracy where good governance and accountability are key benchmarks for development.
"Namibia's position on the governance index in Africa has improved significantly as noted by the Mo Ibrahim Index. A strong monitoring by the Anti-Corruption Commission on public office bearers is one of the major contributions to such improvements," he said.
Geingob added that his term in office has so far been characterized by the declaration of corruption and poverty as the key challenges that are faced by Namibia.
