Juneteenth Will Make a Comeback at African American Cultural Center

A holiday celebrating African American culture returns to Aiken in June.
The Center for African American History, Art and Culture (CAHAAC) will be holding Aiken's Juneteenth Celebration at the center on June 22.
The event will feature arts, crafts, food, entertainment and performances. Health screenings will also be available.
Last year, CAHAAC did not organize an event for the holiday because efforts were focused on completing the first floor of the Immanuel Institute, which was undergoing extensive renovations for its transition into a cultural center.
"Now that it's almost complete we're ready to get back to offering this amazing opportunity to the community to learn about African American culture and share the day in celebration and reflection," said Melencia Johnson of CAAHAC's Board of Directors.
Juneteenth is traditionally observed June 19. The holiday is meant to celebrate African American culture and also aligns with the day that slavery was abolished in Texas in 1865.
The celebration will be held at the cultural center at 120 York St. from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 22. The event is free and open to the public.
