It will be a befitting ceremony recognising great human sacrifice when Eastern Cape's largest University honours namesake Walter Sisulu in Johannesburg this week, 24 February 2007.
The legendary Walter Sisulu will be honoured posthumously at a special graduation ceremony at the Indaba Hotel, Fourways in Johannesburg.
The event - which is the first Honorary Doctorate of the newly merged institution - will commence at 11h00 am.
Mrs Albertina Sisulu is expected to receive the award on his late husband's behalf. A posthumous gown designed in partnership with an international designer and sewed by local Eastern Cape women will also be presented to her.
Dignitaries and distinguished guests from government, business, politics, and academia including the Sisulu family will be in attendance.
The young powerhouse was established on 1 July, 2005 through the merger of the former Border Technikon, Eastern Cape Technikon and the University of Transkei.
Currently, WSU has a student population of approximately 23,000 and a staff component of nearly 2,000.
Strategically located within the Eastern Cape province, this unique comprehensive University straddles a vast spectrum of the urban and rural divide of the region covering over 1000 kilometres.
Mr Walter Sisulu commanded respect from friends and foes because of the dignified manner with which he handled himself as well as the values he embraced.
Mr Walter Sisulu is a towering giant of South Africa and humanity's struggle for justice. His humility, ability to identify and promote leaders, as well as his selflessness are some of his distinctive traits.
WSU is proud to bear its name and its community view this as their biggest asset. Ironically, Walter Sisulu University's Main Campus is on Nelson Mandela Drive, in King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality, in the Oliver Tambo District Municipality.
