Former Mozambican president Cde Joachim Chissano has applauded Zimbabwe’s inclusive Government for the progress it has made since being formed in February last year.
Cde Chissano said this in a public lecture at Midlands State University in Gweru on Saturday. His lecture was titled "Conflict Resolution in Southern Africa — The Case of Mozambique and Zimbabwe".
"I should applaud the inclusive Government for the peace and tranquillity that is currently prevailing in Zimbabwe.
"Tranquillity comes with development and this is key to any nation — let it stay that way," said Cde Chissano.
He added: "We should never forget our long walk to freedom as it is through our past experiences that we learn to live in the future. Conflicts can be resolved, just look at the case of Zimbabwe."
In attendance were the patrons of MSU’s fund-raising’s committee Defence Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa, National Healing Co-Minister Sekai Holland, and Higher and Tertiary Education Minister Stan Mudhenge. The committee seeks funds for a four-storey library.
Earlier, Cde Chissano officially handed over the US$25 000 Mtshingwe Primary School built by Mimosa Company for the Zvishavane community.
Cde Chissano said provision of quality education was the most effective way of fighting poverty. "When we took up arms, with some sacrificing their lives during the liberation struggle, our focus was to liberate our nations so that we can focus on development.
"Now that we got the freedom and the independence that we fought for, our focus as Africans should be on development, something we are witnessing today," he said.
He said he felt at home in Zimbabwe and was proud to be associated with the country.
