Dear advocate for social justice,
We are excited to report that plans for Detroit's 2011 Martin Luther King Day are coming together very well. This 8th annual event will begin at noon on Monday, January 17, 2011 at Central United Methodist Church (located at Woodward and Adams, just south of Comerica Park). We are very pleased and honored to announce that Willie “Mukasa” Ricks, field secretary for Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), is scheduled to deliver the key note address.
The event will also feature an invocation of the spirit of MLK, an award ceremony honoring this year's recipients of the MLK Spirit of Detroit Award – the Detroit Local Organizing Committee (DLOC) of the US Social Forum, musical performances, guest dignitaries, our MLK Youth Exhibition, and of course, a grand Freedom March through downtown Detroit. Marchers will return to Central United for refreshments, community-building networking opportunities and more cultural presentations.
The message for the day will focus on the peace and social justice legacy of Dr. King and how the principles for which he lived and died can be applied to the issues of war, racism and poverty con-fronting us today. While recalling these principles, we will emphasize and rekindle Dr. King's concept of the “beloved community.” To help actualize this glorious notion, we want to connect willing volunteers with community-building organizations.
