The sentencing of Chauncey Owens for the fatal shooting of a Detroit teenager was adjourned this morning because he is under a contempt order for failing to testify against another man allegedly involved in the 2010 shooting.

Defense attorney David Cripps said that the sentencing should be delayed until the contempt citation for the refusal to testify against Charles Jones is resolved.

Judge Richard Skutt wondered aloud about the impact of a contempt citation against a man already facing 28 years in prison for a second-degree murder guilty plea in the shooting of Je’Rean Blake on Mack Avenue for allegedly giving Owens a dirty look.

At his guilty plea, Owens said Jones gave him the gun that was used in the shooting of the 17-year-old.

The plea deal requires him to testify in any upcoming cases.

Jones is the father of Aiyana Jones who was fatally shot by police during the manhunt for Owens.

Cripps said he and Owens are concerned that his grant of immunity does not go far enough and does not protect him from a potential charge of perjury.
