UN chief praises Kenya's role in Somalia

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has commended Kenya’s leadership role in efforts to stabilise Somalia.
Mr Ban especially pointed out at the sacrifice Kenya had made to give the people of Somalia the opportunity for stability and prosperity after 20 years of civil war.
At a meeting with President Mwai Kibaki at Harambee House, Nairobi, Mr Ban said that the UN and the international community would support the latest initiatives that have seen Kenyan Defence Forces (KDF) and those of the Somali Government work together to deal with the Al-Shabaab rebels.
Mr Ban told President Kibaki that he fully understood the position taken by Kenya’s operation in Somalia, and lauded the Cabinet decision, approved by the Kenyan Parliament, to re-hat KDF in Somalia under the Amisom command.
The UN Secretary-General gave an undertaking that the United Nation’s would support Kenya, Igad and the Africa Union to restore stability in Somalia.
President Kibaki said that the people of Somalia had a historic opportunity to bring about peace and stability to their country and encouraged the UN to take an even more pro-active role in the quest.
The President updated Mr Ban on steps the KDF were taking to restore order and provide humanitarian assistance in areas liberated from the Al-Shabaab.
He reiterated that Kenya’s mission was based on a legitimate right to protect its security, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
President Kibaki welcomed the UN Security Council resolution on additional sanctions against Eritrea for undermining peace and stability in Somalia through provision of political, financial, training and logistical support to Al-Shaabab, among other armed opposition groups.
