The Obama administration appears to be the most “secretive” and “dictatorial” when it comes to protecting the rights of American citizens, says Abayomi Azikiwe, editor of Pan-African News Wire.

“It appears as if the Obama administration is perhaps one of the most secretive and perhaps one of the most dictatorial with regard to protecting the rights of individual citizens as well as organizations,” said Azikiwe in a phone interview with the U.S. Desk on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court rejected a lawsuit against the U.S. government for the extension of the FISA Amendments Act of 2008, which President Obama signed in December 2012, allowing five more years of warrantless surveillance.

“It means that people have no recourse within the framework of U.S. law to challenge these abuses,” said Azikiwe.

The law authorizes the government to use warrantless wiretapping to monitor overseas phone calls and emails.

“This is a very, very serious blow to the civil rights and human rights of U.S. citizens and anyone else who may fall victim to the spying and to the surveillance that are being conducted by the administration,” he added.

“We believe that this is not being done simply to protect U.S. citizens and residents from outside attacks. But, it is being designed to prevent and to curtail dissent and also protest against the government.”
