Communiqué from the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) on the death of Comandante President Hugo Chávez Frías

Members of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States and the peoples of Our America have received with consternation and profound grief the news of the death of Comandante President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Hugo Rafael Chávez Frías, on Tuesday, March 5, 2013.

We express our heartfelt condolences to the family of Comandante President Chávez, the government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and all the Venezuelan people, to whom he dedicated his life.

His constant dedication to the sovereignty and integration of our nations and the development of solidarity among the peoples of the region; his commitment to eradicating poverty and inequality in Venezuela and in our region; and his decision to work to attain a united, strong and secure Latin America and Caribbean are values which have nourished the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.

For CELAC, of which he was one of the principal founders and promoters, the example of Comandante President Chávez inspires us to redouble our efforts on behalf of Latin American and Caribbean unity, cooperation, solidarity and integration. This is the finest tribute that we, the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean, can make to Comandante President Hugo Chávez Frías.
