Since the September 11, 2001 attacks, the United States has significantly expanded its security and intelligence capabilities. It has created massive new agencies like the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Transportation Security Agency (TSA) to deal with any future terrorist threats.

The Boston bombings, however, are raising fresh questions about the U.S. preparedness to deal with the rising use of IEDs inside the country.

Abayomi Azikiwe, the editor of the Pan-African News Wire, told Press TV’s US desk that he believes the Boston tragedy “is a representation of the level of violence and alienation that exists in American society.”

He added that the bombings prove the American government cannot ensure the public’s safety despite spending huge amounts of tax payer money on homeland security.

“The bombing also points to the fact that even though the United States has spent hundreds of billions of dollars on homeland security since September 11, 2011 all of those measures have not served to safeguard the country from these types of incidents."

Azikiwe also warned about the possible consequences of the attack for the American society.

“We are hoping that government will not use this as an excuse to... further curb the civil liberties of people inside the United States in a similar way that we saw in the aftermath of 9/11.”
