Remnants of Iraq’s Baath party, loyal to former dictator Saddam Hussein, are making a strategic alliance with al-Qaeda militants to spread terror in the country, an analyst tells Press TV.

“The remnants of the Baath party and the remnants of the former regime, the Saddamists, are taking advantage of al-Qaeda and making a strategic alliance with al-Qaeda to spread terror in the country,” political analyst, Intifad Qanbar said in an interview with on Wednesday.

The analyst noted that the two groups are using terror tactics to intimidate the people in light of the upcoming provincial elections in the country.

“These [terrorist] attacks are cowardly attacks that are not going to stop the people from practicing their freedom and their rights of choosing their representatives in the coming provincial elections and the Iraqi people are used to it,” he added.

Qanbar pointed to al-Qaeda alliance with foreign-backed militants fighting against the government of Bashar al-Assad in Syria, saying “some Arab countries who are helping this terrorism to flourish in Iraq and in Syria,” must be stopped quickly as they aim to create mayhem and sectarian division in the region.

On Monday, more than 55 people were killed and almost 200 others were injured in a spate of bomb attacks across Iraq.

The bombings were the latest in a string of attacks that have left scores of people dead across Iraq this year.

Iraq is preparing for its first elections in three years. The provincial polls are due to be held in 12 of Iraq’s 18 provinces on April 20.
