Malawi President Joyce Banda will officially open the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair in Bulawayo later this month.

Industry and Commerce Deputy Minister Mike Bimha said Malawi’s first woman president had accepted the invitation.

“Yes, I can confirm she is coming to officially open the fair, but I am not sure exactly as to which day she will be in the country,” he said.

The ZITF runs from April 23 to 27.

President Banda would be visiting Zimbabwe for the first time since taking over power following the death of Bingu wa Mutharika last year.

Meanwhile, preparations for the international trade showcase have reached an advanced stage.

In a statement, the ZITF noted that exhibitors had started upgrading and sprucing up their pavilions in time for the showcase.

More than 48 000 square metres had been booked to date which amounts to over 94 percent of available exhibition space.

The ZITF 2013 International Business Conference, which will run parallel to the Trade Fair, is also set to be a major highlight.

“It promises to be a fruitful platform that will contribute positively to the socio-economic transformation of the country,” read part of the statement.

The Trade Fair will run under the theme, “Building value, enhancing growth”.
