Pact between Sudan govt, JEM ‘a big step forward’

The signing of the agreement based on the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD) between the Sudanese government and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) was a big step towards achieving peace in Darfur, HE the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Ahmed bin Abdullah al-Mahmoud. said yesterday.

Delivering the keynote speech at the fifth meeting of the Doha Document for Peace follow-up committee, which concluded at the Ritz Carlton hotel yesterday, al-Mahmoud stressed that the Doha Document for Peace paved the way for reducing violence and enhancing security in large areas in Darfur.

The Deputy Prime Minister admitted there were some challenges facing the implementation, but called on all parties concerned to commit to the Doha Document for Peace because failure to implement it will have “drastic effects on Darfur, Sudan and the entire region”.

One of the main challenges, the Deputy Prime Minister said, was convincing other groups to join the peace process, stressing however that the signing of the agreement by the Sudanese government and JEM was a big step towards overcoming this challenge.

The Deputy Prime Minister said that the second challenge was raising the necessary resources. Al-Mahmoud added that the parties involved have done a good job of evaluating the resources available.

He called on the international community to contribute to covering any drop in resources that Sudan could face.

The Deputy Prime Minister noted that any good initiative could fail if it was not accompanied by a wise developmental plan especially as the tension in Darfur let to the destruction of the Infrastructure.

Al-Mahmoud further said that the Donors Conference for the Reconstruction and Development of Darfur was an important step towards providing the necessary resources for Darfur.

He said that the results of the conference gave a boost to start developmental plans in Darfur.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs stressed however that it was the duty of the follow-up committee to evaluate the implementation of the agreement.

Later al-Mahmoud told reporters that the UN-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) made a presentation on the current developments in the West-Sudan region at the meeting.

The president of Darfur Regional Authority and the head of the Sudanese government’s delegation also briefed the meeting on the what have been accomplished so far from both sides, al-Mahmoud added.

He pointed out that the committee’s members made several comments and suggestions, adding that the result of the meeting was positive.

The participating countries expressed enthusiasm and support for the peace and development process in the region and that some countries like France pledged to provide additional support for development and reconstruction projects in Darfur, he added.

He also said Qatar has been congratulated on the success of the international donors’ conference, and many countries, including the Security Council permanent member states expressed enthusiasm and support for the peace process in Darfur and the results of the donors’ conference, he said.

On behalf of the committee members, al-Mahmoud condemned the attack carried out recently by some movements that have not signed the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur.

The Deputy Prime Minister called on other groups to join the peace process, based on the Doha Document for Peace, without pre-conditions.
