SOMALIA: Djibouti to deploy additional troops into Somalia
Djibouti (RBC) Djiboutian peace keepers in Somalia will receive additional troops those will join the African Union Mission in Somalia [AMISOM], Djibouti parliament speaker said on Wednesday.
“Djibouti will reinforce its troops in Somalia soon to boost the security and stability there.” Idiris Arnaud Ali told the press.
The small northeastern African country has sent its troops to Somalia under the flag of AMISOM on December 2012. The first batch of the peacekeepers were sent to Hiiraan region in central Somalia where the Ethiopian and government forces expelled Al Shabab militants on September last year.
“Our forces are there to lend a hand to the rebirth of Somalia, and we are proud of that. Somalia is not alone since Djibouti is there.”
The speaker added.
According to military sources the new deployment will mean to refrain from any security vacuum after the Ethiopian forces pull out from the country. In March Ethiopian vacated two districts of southern Somalia that led to extremists capture.
Somalia government asked the AMISOM contributing countries to help protect any vacuum that may arise after the Ethiopian pull out.
Ethiopia is not part of AMISOM mission in Somalia but has been independently combating against extremists.
