US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle will be welcomed by a series of achievement awards and a string of anti-US protests when they set foot in South Africa at the end of the month.

The protests dubbed “no, you can’t honour Obama”, will commence on Saturday and stretch until June 29 when the US President is scheduled to be awarded with an honorary doctorate by the University of Johannesburg at the Soweto campus.

SRC president Levy Masete said on Wednesday the students council had unanimously voted against the institution’s decision to award Obama with the doctorate because he had not done much for South Africans, Africans and African - Americans.

“Obama is guilty of human rights violations and he does not strike us as the black president African- Americans have been waiting for,” said Masete.

Obama stands accused of failing to shut down the Guantanamo Bay prison and failing to withdraw all US troops from Iraq.

The protests will be led by Cosatu, the Young Communist League, Nehawu and the university’s SRC.
