THE United States government is ready to accept President Mugabe’s victory at the harmonised elections to be held on July 31 after realising that Zanu-PF was indispensible, a former MDC-T ally has said.

Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe secretary-general Mr Raymond Majongwe told The Herald that America had changed its aggressive and hardliner stance towards the revolutionary party and its leader after losing confidence in Mr Morgan Tsvangirai and his party.

He made the remarks after meeting Mr Tsvangirai under the banner of the civil society on Wednesday, spearheaded by the Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition.

“I told him (Mr Tsvangirai) that the Americans are not talking about free and fair elections in Zimbabwe anymore but peaceful elections,” he said.

“America’s attitude towards Zanu-PF has changed compared to their stance about five years ago. They are now ready to work with Zanu-PF after the elections. They are willing to accept a Mugabe victory at the elections.

“All those high level visits by Americans to President Mugabe of late are testimony to America’s change of attitude. I think their attitude has changed because they now accept that Zanu-PF will not get out of power. The other reason is that they have realised that Zimbabwe has focused its attention on the Look East policy so they want to come back. These are the points I was raising to Tsvangirai.”

Mr Majongwe said as civil servants they wanted elections to end the inclusive Government that he said made them to suffer.
