Aug 07, 2013

Moscow, (SANA)- Russia expressed strong condemnation of the terrorist bombing which took place in the city of Jaramana in Damascus Countryside Tuesday and claimed the lives of 18 people and caused injury to scores of others, including children.

"Russia strongly condemns the new terrorist operation," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement issued Wednesday, noting that this operation is the second that is carried out in densely populated areas in the last two weeks.

The statement added that extremists, while forced to retreat before the government forces, are trying through these acts to take revenge against unarmed civilian citizens so as to spread panic and chaos in a bid to escalate violence in the country.

"We once again urge all the countries and parties with influence on the extremists in Syria to commit those to immediately put an end to the terrorist attacks and armed violence in Syria," it added.

The Russian Foreign Ministry expressed the Russian government's condolences to the victims' families and its wishes of speedy recovery for the injured.

Lavrov calls upon Security Council to condemn terrorist acts in Syria

Aug 07, 2013

Moscow, (SANA) – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stressed the necessity that the Security Council condemn the terrorist acts taking place in Syria so as to unify efforts and stances in combating terrorism.

Lavrov told a press conference held jointly with Ghana's Foreign Minister that Russia is waiting for a response from the "Syrian opposition" to participate in the international conference due to be held in Syria.

He noted that Russia will continue calling upon the "Syrian opposition" to sit at the negotiating table.

Russian-UN talks Thursday to discuss holding international conference on Syria

The Russian Foreign Ministry earlier announced that Foreign Minister Lavrov will hold talks with the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday during which he will discuss the issue of holding the international conference on Syria.

The Ministry clarified in a statement that the talks with Ki-moon in which "some most urgent international issues" will be discussed will take place in the framework of Lavrov and Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu's visit to the US who are meeting their counterparts in New York.

The statement pointed out that talks regarding Syria will focus on the prospects of settling the situation in it in the framework of the Russian-U.S. initiative on convening an international conference to find a solution to the crisis.

Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vitaly Churkin, said in a press release that the disunion of the Syrian opposition is the main reason hindering the efforts to hold the international conference on Syria.

Churkin hoped that the conference will be held before the upcoming session of the General Assembly scheduled next September.

Ryabkov: No initial date for holding international conference on Syria

In turn, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, Sergei Ryabkov, said that the development concerning the international conference on Syria is insufficient to announce an initial date for it.

In a statement on Wednesday, he said that Russia is continuously resisting the attempts to keep on the military solution instead of the political process, which is the only possible option for solution.

He added that some powers apparently decided to suspend the international conference hoping for a change in the field after the governmental forces have made several military achievements lately.

Ryabkov considered the conference as the launch pad for a national reconciliation process.
