Ptolemaic mummy with painted anthropoid coffin found hidden in private house in Giza
Police have found a Ptolemaic mummy hidden inside a private house in Giza. Archaeological officials have authenticated the find and say it probably came from an illegal excavation.
Central administration for confiscated antiquities head Youssef Khalifa said the mummy was in a very good condition and was found after a comprehensive investigation by the Tourism and Antiquities Police.
The owner of the house, he continued, is accused of theft and trading in stolen antiquities.
The mummy is wrapped in linen covered with a mask painted in blue and gold. The face is decorated with geometric and foliage ornaments. The lower part of the mummy, Khalifa added, bears a large decoration depicting the ancient Egyptian goddess Nut with wings and the four sons of the god Horus.
The mummy is being held until investigations are complete. It will be then be taken to the Egyptian Museum for restoration and put on display.
