Lebanese President Michel Sleiman says Thursday’s deadly bombing in the southern suburb of Beirut bears the fingerprints of the Israeli regime.

The car bomb attack killed at least 21 people and injured more than 250 in the Shia neighborhood of Ruwaiss in Beirut. The area is a stronghold of the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah.

“This is a criminal act that bears the fingerprints of terrorism and Israel, and is aimed to destabilize Lebanon and deal a blow to the resilience of the Lebanese,” Sleiman said on Thursday night.

Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati announced that Friday would be a national day of mourning.

Prime Minister-designate Tammam Salam also censured the attack and called for support for the security forces.

In addition, former Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri condemned the attack, describing it a “horrific crime”.

“The blast is part of a terrorist scheme that aims to sow strife and evil across Lebanon,” Hariri said in a statement released by his media office.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Turkey, and Iran also condemned the attack. Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Araghchi said the Zionists and their allies are plotting to destabilize Lebanon but the Lebanese people and the Islamic resistance will neutralize the plots.

In an interview with Press TV on July 24, an international human rights lawyer said that foreign powers are attempting to fabricate and benefit from Shia-Sunni discord in the Middle East, seeking to see the Muslim world weakened in the wake of such rifts.

“Who benefits is of course the key issue. It’s really not the people of Iraq, it’s not the Sunnis, it’s not the Shias. It is external powers that want to exploit and create division. Those are the parties that benefit,” said Canada-based attorney Edward Corrigan.

“It’s certainly not the people in the region [that benefit from sectarian conflicts]; it’s not Iran; it’s not Iraq; it’s not the people of Syria, which are now witnessing the destruction of their state and where there has been attempts to provoke similar sectarian conflict in Lebanon,” he added.

Blasts won’t change Iran pro-resistance stance

Secretary of Iran Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani says the terrorist attacks against Iran Embassy in Beirut will not dissuade Iran from continuing its support for the anti-Israeli resistance front.

“Such actions will have no impact on Iran’s continued support for the Islamic resistance current,” Shamkhani said on Tuesday.

He made the remark in a meeting with Syrian Ambassador to Tehran Adnan Mahmoud, who submitted a written message from the head of Syria’s National Security Bureau Ali Mamlouk.

Shamkhani condemned the deadly attacks, which have killed more than 23 people, describing them as a sign of the desperation of Israel and its terrorist allies.

According to Press TV sources, the first explosion took place when a bomber blew his explosives near the gate of the embassy, and the second blast happened just meters away when a car bomb went off.

The death toll is expected to rise, as many of the wounded are in critical condition.

The blasts have also caused damage to the Iranian Embassy and nearby buildings.

Meanwhile, Abdullah Azzam Brigades, an al-Qaeda-linked group, has claimed responsibility for the twin bombings.

The Syrian government has also condemned the terrorist attack.

Syria min. blames KSA, Arab PG states, Israel for Beirut blasts

Tue Nov 19, 2013 1:24PM GMT

Syrian information minister has laid the blame on Saudi Arabia and some other Arab Persian Gulf states as well as the Israeli regime for deadly blasts outside the Iranian Embassy in the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Omran al-Zoubi said that “We quite realize that certain countries in the region such as Saudi Arabia and some [Arab Persian] Gulf states and Israel want to promote the culture of terrorism and spread it in the region.”

Earlier in the day, the Syrian government strongly condemned the explosions saying, “Petro-dollar is smelled in the terrorism hitting Syria, Lebanon and Iraq, and thus the Syrian government calls upon the Lebanese people to stick to the national unity to confront terrorism.”

Nearly two dozen people were killed and over 140 others injured in two bomb explosions outside the Iranian Embassy in Beirut on Tuesday.

The bombings were carried out in Beirut’s southern neighborhood of Jinah.

Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati described the bombings as “a cowardly terrorist act.”

Mikati was quoted by Lebanese NNA news agency as saying that the aim of the attacks was to “stir-up the situation in Lebanon.”

“We have asked the security apparatuses to speed up the investigations to uncover and arrest the perpetrators.”

The United States and the UN Security Council have yet to condemn the terrorist attacks on the Iranian Embassy in Beirut, which killed a senior Iranian diplomat.

Several hours following Tuesday’s deadly attacks, which killed and injured scores of people, Washington and the UN Security Council are still tight-lipped.
