Talks were scheduled to get underway in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa aimed at reaching a workable ceasefire in the fighting in the Republic of South Sudan.

Since December 15 a power struggle between followers of President Salva Kiir and those of ousted Vice-President Riek Machar.

Claims and counter-claims of control over territory in Jonglei, Upper Nile and Unity states have surfaced over the last week.

The Food and Agricultural Administration (FAO) has forecast that a severe food shortage will occur in the Central African Republic where France and Chad have deployed troops. Since the intervention of Paris and N'Djamena the social and security situation in the CAR has worsened.

In the Middle Eastern nation of Iraq the country has experienced its worst year of violence since the United States military invasion and occupation which lasted for over eight years. Thousands have been killed and displaced since 2013. Recent reports say that the Iraqi government has lost control of the strategic town of Fallujah.

Finally, there has been a winner declared in the national presidential elections in Madagascar. Hery Rajaonarimampianina, a former minister, is to rule the country after nearly five years of a political standoff.
