The leadership of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) has been urged to do everything to ensure that the party’s structures at all levels are functional ahead of the battle for political power in 2016.

Mr Samuel Kwabena Danso, a former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party, said there was an urgent need to inject vibrancy into the party to send strong signal that it was ready to contest and win the general polls - two years away.

There should be no time to waste and they should get down to serious work, he said, when he spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi.

He reminded the leaders to put in place an organizational plan to convince voters that the CPP was in for business and that it was the party they could trust with their votes.

Mr Danso expressed deep upset about what he said was the inaction of the national officers, and said he found it “difficult to understand what is happening”.

“While, the other opposing political parties were taking steps to organize things to engage in a real contest, the CPP appeared to be showing no signs of life, something” he labelled as unhealthy.

The former Chairman said he had no doubt that when it got its act right, the party could easily win the 2016 polls because it was not carrying any ethnicity baggage.

He rallied genuine members to work with unity of purpose and accept to make the needed sacrifices to restore the CPP to its proper place in Ghanaian politics.

CPP, family want Akrofi’s murder investigated

By  Abdul Aziz
Wednesday, 02 July 2014 08:31

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) and the family of Hayford Akrofi, the late Vice-Chairman of the UK branch of the party, have called for thorough investigations into the murder of the vice-chairman.

They suspected it was not a case of armed robbery but one that smacked of a hidden agenda.

“The murder of Mr Akrofi, who the party holds in high esteem because of his dedication to the party, may have come about as a result of a “hidden agenda  and contract killing,” they lamented.

Odum tree

The Chairperson and leader of the CPP, Ms Samia Nkrumah, and the sister of the deceased, Ms Georgina Akrofi, who made the call at the one week celebration of the death of the vice-chairman, said had it been robbery, Mr Akrofi’s money, laptops and mobile phones could have been taken away by the robbers.

They also alleged that the robbers told the children they had been sent to kill Mr Akrofi.

Ms Nkrumah said Mr Akrofi, who had served the party for several years, was like the “Odum tree’’ of the party and his death could be likened to an Odum tree that had been axed to stop the revitalisation programme of the party.

She said the party had resolved to not be daunted by the demise of Mr Akrofi but rather rededicate themselves to ensuring that the revitalisation programme would succeed so that his death would not be in vain.

Dangers

The CPP Chairman said Mr Akrofi was one of the pillars of the party, who, as soon as he arrived in the country from the United Kingdom, plunged into the activities of the party, providing his vast experience and advice for the benefit of the party.

She said Mr Akrofi had the ability to grasp issues, compartmentalise them and provide the required leadership, and these made him very prominent in the party’s campaign against genetically modified organism (GMO), and the Plant Breeders Bill.

She said Mr Akrofi was one of the main proponents who sensitised party members and the public to the dangers of GMO and the need for Parliament and Ghanaians to reject them.

Ms Nkrumah said Mr Akrofi’s knowledge of traditional matters helped the party as he travelled with the leadership to attend executive committee meeting in Tamale, as well as funerals, where his knowledge of tradition assisted the party greatly.

Ms Nkrumah said Mr Akrofi also held the position of Secretary of the Consultative and Co-ordinating Committee of the Central Committee, which was one of the highest decision-making bodies of the party.

She revealed that Mr Akrofi had just returned from the funeral of the former Ashanti Regional
Chairman of the CPP in Kumasi on Saturday only to be murdered in cold blood on Monday, which really sent shock waves throughout the entire party.

Ms Nkrumah said it was in this vein that the party wanted to show solidarity with the family by hosting the one week celebration at the party headquarters.

Ms Akrofi, who spoke on behalf of the family, said the entire family was extremely moved by the overwhelming solidarity shown by the CPP party, especially its Chairperson, Ms Nkrumah, right from the day the murder took place.

A 64-year-old executive committee member of the Convention People’s Party, Mr. Hayford Akrofi was in the early hours of Monday shot dead by two unknown assailants at his residence at Ofankor in Accra.

The assailants who shot Mr. Akrofi twice, were also said to have sexually assaulted his two young relatives who were in the house, located on the Osafan Street.

Family sources suspect the assailants were robbers but were unsure what they were able to take away.

They wore hoods and gloves and escaped after assaulting the ladies and killing the architect, who until his death, was an active member of the CPP.

He lived in the United Kingdom (UK) and relocated to Accra recently.

Mr. Akrofi hails from Tutu-Akwapim in the Eastern Region and left behind a wife and three children who still reside in London.

The body has been taken to the Police Hospital in Accra while police say they have begun investigations into the dastardly act.

Once divided no Ghanaian will vote for Nkrumaist party — Ahiadzro

By  Tim Dzamboe
Thursday, 19 June 2014 03:33

A former Volta Regional Chairman of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Mr Prince Ahiadzro, has warned that unless the Nkrumaist family unites, they cannot rule the nation again.

He said it was unfortunate that the three splinter groups could not come together to win elections and added that once they were divided, no Ghanaian would vote for any splinter group.

The splinter groups are the CPP, People’s National Convention (PNC) and the Great Consolidated People’s Party (GCPP). He also mentioned the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) as a breakaway party that needed to be brought on board if the Nkrumaist forces were to be taken seriously.

He said the current rift among the three national vice chairmen and the national chairman of the CPP did not augur well for the party’s quest to win political power.

Mr Ahiadzro, who is also the shadow minister of tourism and creative arts and a member of the central committee of the CPP, said under those circumstances, the CPP could be playing second fiddle to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He said the CPP should forget it if the Nkrumaist parties could not unite, adding that some people had consulted him to contest the position of the national chairman of the CPP but could only do that if the Nkrumaist groups were united.

He admonished the CPP to stop singing “there is victory for us,” and asked: “Where is the victory with these splinter groups?”

Mr Ahiadzro said the ‘winner takes all system’ was not helping the nation and he was of the conviction that it should be reviewed.

He called on Ghanaians to pray for President Mahama’s administration to overcome present challenges because the situation in the country was so terrible that it needed prayers for redemption.

He expressed the hope that the economy could be fixed before 2016 but through a lot of consultations with relevant experts.
