A senior Hamas official says the Palestinian resistance movement is ready to hit back at Israeli forces should the Tel Aviv regime launch a ground incursion into the besieged Gaza Strip.

"Israelis are trying to heat up the situation in order to start a ground operation, which will not be an easy issue for the Israelis and also for the resistance. But we are ready to face that," Osama Hamdan, the head of Hamas’ international relations committee, told Press TV on Thursday.

"Any attack against Gaza will be replied and we will react against that attack whether it is a rocket launched against Gaza or a ground military operation,” he said, adding, “I can guarantee that if they decide to have a military operation, a ground operation, it will not be a smooth operation; it will be very tough. I believe they have to understand that there will be casualties far more than they can expect.”

The Hamas official went on to say that the Israeli mentality counts on the support it receives from the United States for its aggression against the Palestinians.

He stated that Tel Aviv miscalculates the military capabilities of the resistance, while Hamas has shown dramatic improvements in its retaliatory attacks on Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told Knesset’s foreign affairs and military committee that a ceasefire with Palestinians is not “even on the agenda.”

More than 95 Palestinians, including women and children, have been killed since the Israeli regime began pounding targets in the besieged Palestinian enclave three days ago.

On Thursday, Israeli military spokesman, Peter Lerner, said Israel had struck more than 320 targets overnight in Gaza, noting that over 750 sites in Gaza had been hit by Israeli jets since Tuesday.

In retaliation, Hamas also fired more than 200 rockets from Gaza into Israeli towns and cities. Israeli media reports said only some 60 of those rockets were intercepted by the US-funded Iron Dome missile system.

Over 160 Palestinians, including women and children, were killed and about 1,200 others were injured in Israel’s eight-day offensive on the coastal enclave, which ended on November 21, 2012.
