A-HIGH-POWERED Russian business delegation led by Foreign Minister Mr Sergey Lavrov is expected in Zimbabwe today on a three-day official visit during which a number of trade and investment deals are expected to be sealed. The delegation will interact with Government, business and industry leaders at a dinner hosted by The Herald Business in collaboration with the Bankers Association of Zimbabwe at Rainbow Towers today.

Mr Lavrov will lead his delegation that has interests in several sectors of the economy, among them mining, energy, agriculture and infrastructure development.

He is expected to pay a courtesy call on President Mugabe and participate in the commissioning of the $1 billion Darwendale Integrated Platinum Group Metals Project in Mashonaland West on Tuesday.

The project is a joint venture between the Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation and Russian investors that include VB Bank and RUSTEC among others with interest in Zimbabwe.

The visit by the Russian delegation coincides with the First Session of the Zimbabwe-Russia Joint Permanent Commission on Economic, Technical and Trade Co-operation that will take place today.

The Joint Commission session would be co-chaired by Foreign Affairs Minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi and Russian Minister of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov.

Mines and Mining Development Minister Walter Chidhakwa  and Finance and Economic Development Patrick Chinamasa could not be reached to explain more on the visit yesterday.

In a statement last week, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Joint Commission was expected to discuss cooperation in trade and investment, mining, energy, agriculture, information communication technology, transport, infrastructure development, tourism, and tertiary education sectors, among others.

A business forum would be organised during the session of the Joint Commission.

Relations between Zimbabwe and Russia date back to the liberation struggle when it supported nationalists who toppled the Ian Smith regime.

The country has also supported Zimbabwe in its fight against Western countries and together with China, vetoed attempts by Britain and the United States to impose United Nations sanctions on Zimbabwe.

The visit by Mr Lavrov comes hard on the heels of President Mugabe’s successful trip to China last month where he clinched mega deals, with Beijing pledging to support Zimbabwe’s key economic areas that include agriculture, energy, tourism and railways.

These economic enablers such as the rehabilitation and construction of new infrastructure in the energy sector, railway and roads among others that are key to the successful implementation of Zim Asset, a Government economic blueprint.
