Eight people were shot – two fatally – in a four-hour span in New Orleans Tuesday (Aug. 25) night. One of the shooting victims was a 2-year-old boy who authorities said was sitting with his uncle on the porch of a 7th Ward home.
The violence started around 5 p.m., when NOPD Superintendent Michael Harrison said the toddler and an adult man were shot in the 1700 block of Laharpe Street. Harrison said two men got out of a car, walked up to the man on the porch and started shooting after "some type of conversation."
The man was shot multiple times and died hours later at the hospital, police said. The toddler was shot in the leg, and his injury did not appear life-threatening. He was in stable condition Tuesday night.
"This is absolutely senseless," Harrison said. "We are outraged."
Family members at the scene said the toddler was the injured man's nephew.
"It's so senseless – day, night, they just don't care," said Lillie Reese.
The 2-year-old is her grandson, she said, and she was getting ready to walk out of her house next door to join the boy and his uncle on the porch when she heard the gunshots.
"We do this everyday – sit on the porch and let the children play," she said. "This is just so senseless."
Mayor Mitch Landrieu also was at the shooting scene, talking to family members of the victims.
While police were investigating that shooting, another man was shot multiple times in the 1400 block of Lafreniere Street around 6 p.m. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
About an hour later, four people were shot as they were standing outside near Fern and Olive Streets around 7 p.m. A 19-year-old man died at the scene, and police said the other three victims, all adult men, were in critical condition at the hospital.
Officer Frank Robertson said police were looking for a dark-colored Ford F-150 truck that was seen leaving the shooting scene.
He said detectives did not believe any of those three shootings were related.
While investigators still were at that scene, officers responded to the fourth reported shooting in the city in a four-hour span. A man was shot in the leg in the 500 block of South Cortez Street in Mid-City around 9 p.m. Details about the shooting, including the man's condition, were not immediately available.
A man also was critically wounded in a shooting in Harvey Tuesday night. The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office said around 8 p.m. that the man was shot in the 1100 block of Scotsdale Drive.
