Many people were feared killed yesterday after two explosions went off at the popular Kano mobile phones market at Farm Center, Kano.

The state Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Musa Katsina, confirmed the death of 15 persons, saying 53 others were injured. According to him, the incident occurred when a Sharon space wagon vehicle arrived at the market with six passengers and dropped two females. He said soon after they alighted from the vehicle, the women entered the GSM market through different gates and detonated the bombs. He said the injured ones were taken to hospital for treatment. He advised residents to be extra careful and report any suspected character or movement to security agents for prompt response.

Two bombs went off and killed the bombers and 13 innocent victims, he said.

Katsina said the police command had dispatched detectives to various places to get the bombers.

Chairman of the GSM market association, Alhaji Umar Isyaku Danfulani, said over 20 people were killed and scores were injured.

“We counted over 20 dead inside the market and many others were injured. Most of the victims were deposited at the Murtala Muhammad General Hospital”, he said.

He added that some of the injured were rushed to the same hospital while others were taken to the
Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital and Abdullahi Wase General Hospital.

At the scene, dismembered remains of one of the bombers were seen beside a fire made by a fried yam seller. Only her thighs and parts of her arms were left.  Her head was blown off, making it difficult to identify her.

A witness, Uzairu Muhammad, a trader at the market, said the casualty figure could reach 50 because the market was filled up when the explosives went off, adding that he was lucky to have escaped.

“I left the area just three minutes before the bomb exploded. It was detonated by two women wearing long white dresses. I saw their mangled bodies before I left the market. From my estimate I believe over 50 people may have died”, he said.
