From Ibrahim Sawab, MaiduguriAn improvised explosive device (IED) planted by suspected Boko Haram militants has killed a commanding officer Lt Col Otobrise Umusu and other soldiers on the Maiduguri-Baga road.

A soldier told our correspondent in Maiduguri yesterday that the deceased were on their way back to Baga town in Kukawa local government area of Borno State.

The soldier, who sought anonymity for not being authorized to speak to the press, said: “It’s confirmed that the senior officer and other soldiers have been evacuated to Maiduguri, but I don’t know whether they were brought to the 7-Div hospital or have been taken to U.M.T.H. (University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital).”

While trying to confirm the attacks, our correspondent placed calls to the phones of two senior Army officers within 7 Division Nigerian Army Maiduguri. Both referred him to the 8-Division in Monguno town.

The Army spokesman at the 8-Division of Nigerian Army Monguno, Col. Onyema Uwachukwu was not reachable as his phone was switched off.

Daily Trust reports that two lieutenant colonels and a number of soldiers died recently in the ongoing fight against Boko Haram.
