Iran Calls for 5+1 Meeting Over US sanctions Extension

TEHRAN, Dec. 18 (MNA) –Iran’s FM Zarif in a letter to EU Foreign Policy chief Federico Mogherini on Sat. has called for a joint commission meeting to discuss US renewal of anti-Iranian sanctions in violation of nuclear deal.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif noted Iran’s full compliance with its commitments under the nuclear agreement over the past year and a half, and stressed the reciprocal nature of commitments and the multilateral characteristic of this international document.
“JCPOA’s integrity and consistency requires all parties to the deal to continue with the implementation of all of its provisions,” Zarif said in the letter.
The Iranian top diplomat referred to the Americans’ repeated pattern of breaking promises and failure in keeping up with their commitments under the JCPOA, calling on EU Foreign Policy chief Federico Mogherini to inform all parties to the agreement and make all necessary preparations for holding a joint commission meeting to discuss the US recent move.
On December 1, the US Senate voted to extend the Iran Sanctions Act (ISA) for another 10 years. US President Barack Obama on Wednesday declined to sign the bill, but allowed the legislation to become law. The move is considered by Iran as a direct violation of the nuclear deal. President Hassan Rouhani in a directive issued to Iranian Foreign Ministry on Dec. 13, called on Zarif and AEOI Head Ali Akbar Salehi to pursue an appropriate response to US violation of JCPOA.
Iran’s envoy to UN Gholamali Khoshroo also addressed Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in a letter on the extension of Iran Sanctions Act (ISA) by US, reminding the UN chief that the move is a violation of the nuclear deal and the US will be held accountable for the adverse consequences.
