The ideas of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, regarding unity and respect for the Caribbean, remain relevant in the Association of Caribbean States (ACS-AEC), stated the organization’s Secretary General, June Soomer, on March 2, in Havana.

I hope that we can further strengthen all these ideas within our organization, and we have high hopes, stated the diplomat from Saint Lucia on arrival to the Cuban capital to participate in various regional events, scheduled to take place next week in Havana.

Regarding the First ACS-AEC Cooperation Conference on March 8, Soomer stated that it includes both member states and observer nations, and should contribute to strengthening the mechanism created on July 24, 1994 in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia.

We will also make decisions directed toward furthering the ACS-AEC’s progress during the Ministerial meeting, stated Soomer, referring to the organization’s 22nd Ministerial Council Meeting, scheduled for March 10.

In her brief encounter with the press, the first woman to be appointed ACS-AEC Secretary General, stated that the organization is currently working to reposition itself and adopt relevant strategies.

Soomer was received at the José Martí International Airport by Foreign Ministry Interim Director General for Latin America and the Caribbean, Carlos Zamora Rodríguez.

The Fifth Caricom-Cuba Ministerial Meeting is set to take place on March 11.
