The Egyptian navy has carried out training exercises with their British and French counterparts in the Red Sea and the Mediterranean, a statement by the Egyptian military said on Monday.

In an official statement, military spokesman Tamer El-Refaie said the training exercise with the British navy included a number of activities related to countering naval mines, as well as an exchange of experiences between the two sides.

According to the spokesman, training on combating naval mines is considered a complex training which calls for skills and experiences attained through continuous training due to the mines’ effect on maritime navigation inside and outside ports and waterways of strategic importance.

The statement added that Egyptian and French vessels carried out a naval exercise in the Mediterranean, including realistic scenarios to confront challenges faced by maritime security in combating terrorism, as well as conducting live fire training and practicing the visit, board, search and seizure (VBSS) procedures for suspect ships.

The training also included applying sailing formations both in the day and at night.

According to the statement, the joint exercises contribute to warfare learning among participating countries, affirming the depth of military cooperation relations with friendly and brotherly countries to address threats faced by maritime security in the Mediterranean.
