Six opposition members detained during protests in Togo have been released on bail, sources at the Justice ministry said on Thursday.Wednesday’s releases came as part of the appeasement measures to facilitate dialogue between the opposition and the government.
12 detainees were freed, and a presidential pardon granted to seven others on 16 July.
This move by the government comes on the heels of the summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The regional bloc had exhorted the government to “implement the confidence and appeasement measures by speeding up the procedures of persons arrested during political demonstrations and to study the possibility of additional measures for those persons.”
