Police in Bahir Dar, Amhara regional state, said that it has seized 497 handguns and over 46,000 ammunition, Amhara Mass Media Agency (AMMA) reported on Wednesday.
Inspector Talema Dagne, a commander within the region’s riot police department, reportedly said that the illegal guns were seized in an oil tanker truck which came from Sudan.
The report also added that the National Information and Security Agency, and community members tipped the region’s police department about it.
According to AMMA report, the police were watching suspected truck since Tuesday. The Driver, whose name was not released by police, attempted to escape but was later captured.
Destination of the fuel oil that the truck was carrying is not disclosed too but the region’s police confirmed that it was not meant for Bahir Dar.
Illegal trade, circulation of illegal hard currencies and illegal firearms have become among the major challenges to the Ethiopian government especially since prime minister Abiy Ahmed took office in April 2018 following the resignation of Hailemariam Desalegne.
