Hezbollah Announces Martyrdom of Commander Ibrahim Aqil, Members

By Al Mayadeen English

The Israeli occupation assassinates Hezbollah Commander Martyr Hajj Ibrahim Aqil and other members in the aggression on Beirut, Lebanon.

The Islamic Resistance in Lebanon - Hezbollah - announced, "with utmost pride and honor, the martyrdom of its senior commander Hajj Ibrahim Aqil 'Abdul Qader' and a group of his comrades" in the Israeli assassination and aggression targeting Beirut's southern suburb earlier on Friday.

In a statement, Hezbollah praised its martyred commander and the "blessed life" he led, "filled with fight, work, wounds, sacrifices, risks, challenges, achievements, and victories." The statement further asserted that Martyr Ibrahim Akil's greatest wish was to pray in Al-Aqsa Mosque and his greatest passion was Al-Quds, Palestine.

Hezbollah pledged to remain steadfast and loyal to its martyred leader's goals, hopes, and path until victory is achieved.

The Islamic Resistance concluded its statement with a tribute and congratulations to all Resistance fighters, factions, and martyrs, extended its sincerest condolences to their families, and prayed they would receive God's greatest rewards, in life and after.

Earlier on Friday, the sounds of explosions ripped through Lebanon's capital Beirut as a strike targeted a residential building in the city's southern suburb.

The attack leveled the entire residential building to the ground. Initial reports indicate that three have been martyred and at least 17 were injured as a result of the attack, the Lebanese Ministry of Health stated shortly after.

In another update, the ministry said that 14 people were martyred and over 66 others were injured in the strike that targeted an eight-storey residential building.

Who is Hezbollah's Ibrahim Aqil, Presumed Commander of Radwan Force?

By Mohammad Al-Jaber

Hezbollah announced the martyrdom of Commander Aqil comes after a blessed life full of jihad, work, wounds, sacrifices, risks, challenges, achievements, and victories.

The Israeli occupation forces on Friday bombarded the Southern Suburb of Beirut targeting a residential building,  crossing yet another red line that the Islamic Resistance in Lebanon had drawn and inflicting more terror on Lebanese civilians.

The strike was launched via fighter jet due to the size of the heavy bombs deployed. The target was a residential building in a residential area that houses a large number of schools, and Al Mayadeen reported that the aggression was comprised of four missiles hitting the building.

The strike constitutes the third violation of the stipulations put in place by Hezbollah, as they had underlined that Beirut was completely off-limits for the Israeli occupation with the war of attrition being concentrated in Southern Lebanon and the Beqaa Valley.

The deterrence equation would not be violated for just any target, and the Israeli occupation had shown before that it would only strike Beirut's Southern Suburb only if the target was worthy of the escalation that would follow suit.

"Israel" struck Beirut only twice before Friday, the first being to assassinate the Deputy Chief of Hamas' Political Bureau, Sheikh Saleh al-Arouri, and the second being to assassinate Hezbollah top commander Hajj Fouad Shokor.

Who is Ibrahim Aqil

Ibrahim Aqil, also known as Hajj Abdul-Qader, is a senior Hezbollah official who has been operating with the Resistance since its inception in the 1980s, but very little information is known about him, as his life has been shrouded in secrecy due to the nature of his post.

This is customary for senior commanders in the Islamic Resistance in Lebanon. As seen with Commander Fouad Shokor, more information will be revealed about the martyr at a later time, and only what the Resistance deems fit will make it to the public.

Ibrahim Aqil, known by his aliases of Hajj Abdul-Qader and Hajj Tahsin, was born in the Baalbek-Hermel governorate in eastern Lebanon. Publicly available information points to either Younine or Bednayel, but nothing is for certain. He was born between 1958-1962.

His path of Resistance started in the 1980s with the formation of Hezbollah, serving in the military wing of the resistance movement, claimed by the United States to have been behind the bombings of the US embassy in Beirut in April 1983 and the bombing of the US marines barracks in October 1983, which killed 241 US personnel.

The Reagan administration at the time accused Hezbollah of planning both attacks, but no evidence was produced. The US allegations gave international prominence to numerous Hezbollah members, including martyrs Hajj Mostafa Badreddine, Hajj Imad Mughniyeh, Hajj Fouad Shokor, and Hajj Ibrahim Aqil, as they were all placed on terror lists.

The United States alleges that Aqil also directed the kidnappings of American and German citizens in Lebanon in the hostage crisis that took place between 1982 and 1992 in close collaboration with Martyr Imad Mughniyeh. However, Hezbollah denies any involvement in these operations.

Little to nothing is known about Aqil's responsibilities over the past 40 years other than him being a senior and core Hezbollah commander.

It is not even known what his position was at the time of the assassination, as it is possible that there was a hierarchical reshuffle within Hezbollah following the assassination of commander Shokor, as all information regarding such inner workings is highly classified.

Assassination attempts

There is only one attempt on Aqil's life that is known to the public, which was ahead of the occupation's withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000, wherein an attack helicopter fired a missile toward his location, which he survived. It is not known whether he sustained any injuries.

'Terrorist' designation

Nothing was said about or heard of Aqil for the following 15 years until the US Department of the Treasury designated him pursuant to Executive Order 13582 for being a Hezbollah member and then in 2019, he was designated as a "specially designated global terrorist".

Radwan Force

Aqil's name made its rounds in news reports back in December in light of escalating tensions between Hezbollah and the Israeli occupation, as Israeli media said he was identified as the head of the Radwan Force, which has been a heavy-hitter against the Israeli occupation forces during the ongoing confrontations on the northern front.

The Radwan Force is Hezbollah's most trained unit, serving as one of the most efficient military units in the region. It is named after martyr Imad Mughniyeh, whose alias was Hajj Radwan. It is a commando force whose main goal is to penetrate deep into enemy territory.

Today, the unit, under which various divisions operate, including armored, anti-armor, and fire-support divisions, stands as the culmination of martyr Mughniyeh and martyr Aqil's struggle in the face of the colonialist and imperialist ambitions in the region. Its name reverberates throughout the Israeli occupation and it is feared even by its upper echelons due to its vast and sophisticated capabilities.

Israeli senior officers have repeatedly underlined that the force is capable of launching coordinated attacks, including the infiltration of Israeli settlements or military positions, underlining that even in the midst of the war, it is undergoing extensive training to launch a ground offensive against the Israeli occupation.

While the assassination of Ibrahim Aqil is definitely a blow to Hezbollah, the Resistance movement said its steadfastness will not waver, and its operations will continue as normal. While leaders and commanders are of high importance to the movement, its continuation is not in any way dependent on any individual, as the structure ensures the preservation of the movement and its military operations regardless of the loss of any senior officials, with the goal of liberation at the forefront.

'Israel' Bombs Southern Suburb of Beirut, Lebanon

The Israeli occupation forces announced that they had carried out an airstrike on Beirut, pledging to publicize further details at a later time.

Al Mayadeen's correspondent said that the casualties include children and that the building is located in the al-Qaem neighborhood in the Southern Suburb of Beirut.

Our correspondent also reported that the Israeli strike was conducted via four missiles.

Emergency services arrived at the site of the Israeli aggression to aid the casualties.

Later on Friday, White House national security spokesperson, John Kirby, said that the United States was not informed of "Israel's" plan to conduct the strike ahead of time.

"I'm not aware of any prenotification of those strikes," Kirby said.

SACP Welcomes Overwhelming United Nations' Vote Against Apartheid Israeli Settler Regime's Occupation of Palestine

Thursday, 19 September 2024

The South African Communist Party (SACP) welcomes the United Nations General Assembly resolution calling on the Israeli regime to end its illegal occupation of the Palestinian territories within twelve months. We reiterate our unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people in their just struggle for freedom and strongly condemn the apartheid Israeli settler regime’s occupation of Palestinian land and continued violation of the Palestinian people’s human rights.

On Wednesday, 18 September 2024, the UN General Assembly, with 124 states voting in favour, demanded the colonial regime to end – without delay – its unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. The occupation constitutes a violation of international law. In addition, the resolution calls for reparations to Palestinians for damages caused by the Israeli occupation. This resolution follows the recent International Court of Justice advisory opinion, which found that Israel’s presence in the Palestinian territories is unlawful and must end.

Since it launched its genocidal offensive on 7 October 2023, the apartheid Israeli settler regime has murdered over 41,000 Palestinians in Gaza, of whom at least 75 per cent are children (16,480), women (11,378) and elderly people. Over 95,337 Palestinians have been injured, while over 7,000 are still buried under destroyed buildings and infrastructure, including over 5,000 children. These statistics are conservative given that there are many unaccounted people and there are others that the apartheid Israeli settler regime has killed in the West Bank.

The apartheid Israeli settler regime is worsening the situation in Gaza, including through malnutrition and dehydration, over and above the direct genocidal killings. At least 2,3 million Palestinians in Gaza now face starvation and disease because of the apartheid Israeli policy of starvation, in line with its broader genocidal strategy to exterminate the Palestinian people.

It is clear that the colonial Israeli regime is unprepared to heed the dictates of international law and does so with the express support of its imperialist benefactor, the United States.

The SACP will continue to take part in protests against the apartheid Israeli settler regime. We call for intensified unity among justice-loving people across the world, including co-operation of the people, governments and international bodies to isolate the apartheid Israeli settler regime economically, politically, culturally and otherwise. In particular, the world working-class movement should develop a leading role in this struggle for a just world order.

SACP Mpumalanga Province Statement on the Ill-treatment of Pensioners

17 September 2024

The South African Communist Party in Mpumalanga Province has learnt with shock and displeasure that there are millions of workers who are still waiting for their payments of pension funds to this day. Some of these workers have since passed away without enjoying the fruits of their labour after retirement.

The SACP in Mpumalanga visited the Thuma Mina Pension Fund in Emalahleni and what we discovered was heart-breaking, though we were not surprised. The forum consists of workers of various sectors but dominated by ex-miners who worked for years in the mining industry. These companies have shifted the responsibility of pension funds to various schemes who prey on workers.

To this end, some have gone over two decades without receiving their pension while companies continue to make profits by exploiting other workers who may also suffer the same fate in the near future. This requires workers to unite and fight against bourgeoisie tendencies of profit maximisation without any fiduciary responsibility to the workers except compensation for selling their labour power.

In building the capable and ethical developmental state, the SACP believes that the South African government should not be reluctant to intervene in the markets in the interests of the working class and poor. In this case, the state should not allow private companies to do as they please while workers suffer.

The developmental agenda requires the environment of trust and taking responsibility for the building a strong economy.

Thuma Mina Forum has exposed how the state lacks intervention in the interests of the workers but takes the side of capital. They have taken the matter to the Financial Service Authority up to the office of the Presidency without any help. The money owed to them is estimated to be above R50 billion and the matter is swept under carpet.

The South African Communist Party calls on the government to intervene as a matter of urgency. We also call on all working-class formations to unite against the wrath of capitalist exploitation. The Party, working with COSATU, Thuma Mina Pension Fund Forum and other organisations will be embarking on a class action to demand the immediate payment of these workers.

The ANC should also pay special attention to the needs and interests of the working and poor if it wants to remain relevant to the masses. It cannot be mum on the issues of its constituency and expect positive electoral outcomes. This is also their fight which they need to be in the centre to represent the interests of the working class and poor.

SACP Mourns the Death of the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Comrade Sitaram Yechury

Thursday, 19 September 2024

The South African Communist Party is deeply saddened by the death of Comrade Sitaram Yechury, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM). Comrade Sitaram (72) breathed his last after a battle with a lung infection. The SACP conveys its message of sincere condolences to the Yechury family, leadership and entire membership of the CPIM as well as the working class in India at large.

In the words of his party,

“Comrade Sitaram Yechury was the topmost leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), an outstanding leader of the Left movement and a well-known Marxist ideologue”.

“He was a brilliant student who secured a first class in both his undergraduate and post-graduate degrees in economics. He joined the student movement in Jawaharlal Nehru University in 1974 and became a leader of the Students’ Federation of India. He was thrice elected as president of the JNU Students Union within a span of two years. He was All-India President of the Students’ Federation …from 1984 to 1986 and played an important role in developing the student organisation as an all-India force”.

As the SACP, we have fond memories of Comrade Sitaram as a strong supporter of the anti-apartheid movement, to bring down the bastion of fascist reaction in Pretoria for the liberation of the people of South Africa.

Comrade Sitaram was also a delegate of the CPIM at the 12th International Meeting of Communist and Workers Parties held in South Africa, and our party had the pleasure in hosting him and engaging in fiery debates on the state of the international working class movement and on major contemporary issues of strategy and tactics.

Comrade Yechury was a firebrand Marxist-Leninist theoretician, and our party always sought to strengthen relations with the broader Indian communist movement, as these consolidated under his leadership. We will remember him for being gifted with good writing skills accompanied by oratorical brilliance and Marxist ingenuity in managing very complex issues of political strategy in the communist movement. He was a political commissar of high note and remained consistent throughout his life.

He fought to maintain the secular, democratic character of India and was in this regard an inspiration for many in the world. We lower our banner in memory of this great leader of the international communist movement and we will all continue admonishing his legacy as one of foremost Communists in the period following the collapse of the Soviet Union.

New Warfare Era: Israelis Weaponize Consumer Goods in Terror Attacks

By Mohammad Al-Jaber, Ali Jezzini

The Israeli occupation indiscriminately targeted Lebanese civilians and Hezbollah members alike in a terrorist attack the likes of which have never been seen before.

Lebanon is reeling from a devastating strike that targeted various assets of its infrastructure after the Israeli occupation seemingly booby-trapped thousands of pager devices used for communication purposes be it among Hezbollah members, medical staff, or regular civilians. The attack in itself is unprecedented both in terms of the manner in which it was carried out and the demographic it targeted, as the indiscriminate nature raised eyebrows the world over.

The pagers detonated during rush on the first day of school for many. Due to the magnitude of the attack, Lebanese were left confused. Many thought there were shootings or individual altercations, others who were closer in vicinity to the explosions thought they were terrorist attacks, as the chaos that ensued was reminiscent of the bombings that had taken place in the southern suburbs of Beirut in the early 2010s. Ambulance sirens were echoing throughout Beirut and elsewhere, and due to the infamous rush hour congestion, it was incredibly difficult for EMTs to get to the wounded; the wounded had to resort to mopeds to get to hospitals for treatment.

The Israeli occupation could not have carried out the terrorist operation at a worse time, and deliberately so. The claims of the attack targeting military personnel could not be more outlandishly false. Those targeted include children, as two have died thus far, and numerous civilians. This is not to mention those who died due to ambulances being occupied with tending to the wounded to the point where they could not tend to people who needed emergency care away from the attacks, or perhaps because they could not reach them in time.

Civilians were a prime target

Every aspect of the attack was deliberate. Its indiscriminate and blanket nature is telling of the Israeli occupation’s tactics and intentions: Inflict as much loss on the enemy regardless of at what cost. There is also a more implicit issue at hand, which is to tarnish the image of Hezbollah by painting the Resistance as jeopardizing the Lebanese people as it put them in harm's way when the devices exploded. The overwhelming support the Resistance and the wounded received after the tragedy proved these efforts were met with failure.

Going back to the indiscriminate nature of the attack and how it put countless civilians in harm's way in more ways that could be fathomable. Perhaps a truck driver could have had his explode while on the highway, losing him control over the vehicle and jeopardizing civilians; a nurse helping in the delivery of a baby; a father carrying his child while resting their body on his waist and so on and so forth. When looked at from this perspective among many others, it begs the question: Does such an atrocity violate international law?

It does. The attack in of its facets, violates international law. The Amended Protocol II of the UN’s Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) prohibits the booby-trapping or the planting of explosives in what seems to be harmless portable objects. Even more so, and more flagrantly, the attack violates the Geneva Convention, which clearly prohibits indiscriminate attacks, and this attack, as per the aforementioned talking points, qualifies as indiscriminate.

A dangerous precedent

One key issue that seems to be glanced over throughout this debacle is how this sets an extremely dangerous precedent, as this is primarily a civilian-use electrical appliance, as aforementioned. It is used by civilians, doctors, and off-duty fighters, meaning its use for an attack of such magnitude opens the door for much worse attacks of the sorts, and we might see a future where the weaponization of dual-use consumer goods on an industrial level – again, we are talking about over devices – becomes the norm in warfare. Not to draw comparisons between the Israeli occupation and Russia, but if Moscow had infiltrated Ukraine’s supply chain and rigged thousands of devices that made their way to military personnel and trickled down to some EMTs and civilians before blowing them up while they were at home or in traffic, there would certainly be more uproar from the collective West.

While eastern “bloc” countries such as Russia, Iran, and China, and even regional Resistance movements carry out any movements or make threats out of self-preservation and self-defense, the whole world rushes to condemn them. Still, the West – be it the United States, France, the United Kingdom, or the Israeli occupation – constantly moves the goalposts to ensure that even if it violates international law, they would not be held accountable. This is especially the case for the Israeli occupation, being the highly valuable Western asset it is. Therefore, instead of being held accountable for their actions, they bend and twist international law to fit their contorted view of the world, violating any and all conventions, laws, and regulations with few to no repercussions.

The terrorist attack, which is arguably ingenious and sophisticated, is but a new spin on an old record. The civilian casualties were swept under the rug, and everyone holding the device or carrying it was accused of being a Hezbollah member. This also ignores the fact that Hezbollah operates or is behind numerous civil institutions that have nothing to do with its military side, such as the Martyr Foundation, an institute that takes care of the orphans and widows of martyrs and another institution for those wounded in combat; the al-Mahdi Schools, a “franchise” of religious schools; and the Qard al-Hassan, a microcredit, and savings institution.

With civilians being targeted and affected in such a manner, assuming that Lebanon did not have the deterrence power it has, it will be time before the country is treated like Gaza.  In that case, just as the Israeli occupation bombs Mosques and Churches, schools, and hospitals under the pretext that Hamas is using them for military purposes, Lebanon’s Mosques will become Hezbollah, its Churches will become Hezbollah, its schools will become Hezbollah; its banks, refugee centers, UN organizations, NGOs, and government buildings will all become Hezbollah as “Israel” finds more ways to inflict more harm on civilians by rendering civil institutions “legitimate military targets”.

How could it all have come to be?

The attack was definitely a blow to Hezbollah, but it is unclear how such a meticulous, organized force that compares to modern armies could have let literal bombs slip through their fingers without any doubts about the possibility of the devices being laden with explosives. So how could have that happened?

Investigations point to batteries being rigged in both the pagers and the walkie-talkies that detonated the very next day. Most reports say the devices had 20 grams of the highly explosive mixture of plastic explosives such as PETN, though it is uncertain how that detectable substance could have passed through customs, especially as the shipment reportedly made it through several airports and had numerous stops before arriving in Lebanon. It is noteworthy that the attack was highly sophisticated and not foreseeable and thus it would have been greatly difficult to expect.

The fingers do still point to PETN which would have been planted in the devices during transit from the Hungarian licensees of Apollo Gold, the makers of the pagers. It would have been wired to the battery with a transceiver and meant to explode when a coded radio signal is sent, thus activating the receiver and detonating the charge. That, combined with the corrosively flammable lithium within the battery and possible shrapnel, would have caused the deadly small blasts.

However, the detectable nature of PETN forces one to shy away from it, as it can be detected through chemicals, X-rays, infrared waves, and microwaves, many of which are directly present in airports all over the world. Surely the Resistance movement has incorporated such devices in its supply chain, and though this is merely theoretical, it does, in this hypothetical, rule out PETN.

Security sources had spoken to Al Mayadeen about the terrorist attack, saying the material used in the unfathomable operation could bypass all scanning equipment available even in countries and airports around the world, saying the undetectable explosive material was “specifically designed for this mission.” The sources added that the devices had been rigged from sources via their microchips where the explosive material was contained.

What could the explosive be?

There are numerous hypotheses as to what the explosives could have been. For example, it is possible they were some plastic explosives that could not be detected because they were contained within the battery, and thus the layers of lithium would have made them undetectable, or they could have been a new yet-to-be-discovered form of plastic explosives developed specifically for such missions, which could bring about a new era of terrorist attacks, with the possibility of quite about any item being laden with explosives unbeknownst to the users.

Another valid hypothesis is that the Israeli occupation found a way to weaponize lithium and charge it, which would be entirely undetectable through scans and would be contained within the battery itself, just as the hypothesis suggesting that it was plastic explosives placed among the lithium. It is noteworthy that the explosive had to have been within the batteries, as the handheld radio receivers weigh a lot less without their batteries, and thus any alteration of the weight without the battery being in the device would be noticeable.

Lithium is highly flammable and extremely reactive, with any form of water or condensation turning it into the equivalent of a portable, miniature sun burning at around 2,000 degrees Celsius while producing explosive hydrogen gas, though it is unclear how exactly this could have been weaponized.

What is certain is that the explosives themselves were directional or contained a shaped charge, as seen in several CCTV footage showing the blasts, with the explosion itself emanating from the screen toward the user. It is also suspected that the devices contained some sort of shrapnel as concluded from numerous photos obtained by Al Mayadeen showing the martyrs and the wounded. The photos and videos showed possible pellet-shaped holes that point to the possibility of the device containing such material intended to inflict additional harm.

While many aspects of the operation remain shrouded in mystery pending an investigation by Hezbollah, which Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah promised during his speech on Thursday, few things remain certain: The Israeli occupation is a terrorist regime that will cross any red lines necessary to inflict harm on its adversaries, be it with civilian casualties or not; and this operation will have a devastating toll on the supply chain of communication devices such as the ones used in the attack, with demand diminishing for devices made in Japan, whose ICOM devices exploded on Wednesday, and Taiwan and Hungary.

Any organization, military, or leadership that seeks security without foreign meddling will resort to Russia, China, or the like for more secure devices free from tampering.

'Israel Eroding Two-state Solution,' Says Chinese UN Deputy Ambassador

By Al Mayadeen English

19 Sep 2024 21:48

"Israel" continues to wield an exclusive veto over Palestinian statehood, effectively obstructing the Palestinians' right to self-determination, Chinese Deputy Ambassador to the UN Geng Shuang said.

Chinese Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations, Geng Shuang, stated on Thursday that "Israel" continues to take actions that undermine the potential for a "two-state solution" in its continuous aggressions against Palestinians.

"Israel's actions continue to erode the foundation of the two-state solution and increasingly reveal its rejection of and resistance to the two-state solution," Geng said during a UN Security Council meeting on the situation in the Middle East.

Geng Shuang remarked that over the past three months, "Israel" has significantly ramped up its military operations and escalated provocations, despite assurances from the US that "Israel" had agreed to a proposed ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Geng further noted that "Israel" continues to wield an exclusive veto over Palestinian statehood, effectively obstructing the Palestinians' right to self-determination.

The remarks follow a vote on Wednesday at the UN General Assembly, where a non-binding resolution was adopted urging "Israel" to withdraw from the occupied Palestinian territories within a year.

It passed with 124 votes in favor, 14 against, and 43 abstentions, with the US among those opposing it.

Although the advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is not legally binding, it holds considerable influence under international law and could potentially erode support for the occupation. Similarly, the General Assembly’s non-binding resolution carries political weight despite its lack of enforceability.

"Israel" strongly rejected the resolution, with its UN ambassador condemning it as a "shameful decision" and accusing it of supporting the Palestinian Authority’s so-called "diplomatic terrorism." Meanwhile, the US opposed the resolution, calling it "inflammatory" and counterproductive to peace efforts.

International observers warn that tensions in the region may escalate following a massive terrorist attack that targeted telecommunication devices in Lebanon.

Western news agencies have confirmed Israeli involvement and justified the aggression on the basis that the attack is intended to target members of Hezbollah.

The reality, however, is that the devices were used by workers of a wide range of professions, including teachers, health workers and industrial workers.

The UN Security Council is set to convene on Friday to discuss the attack.

Israeli Regime Will Face Crushing Response From Axis: IRGC Commander

By Al Mayadeen English

In a letter to Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, Major General Hossein Salami emphasized the severity of the upcoming response to be dealt to the Israeli regime after the terror attacks on Lebanon.

The Israeli regime will face "a crushing response from the Axis of Resistance," the Commander-in-Chief of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC), Major General Hossein Salami, wrote in a letter to Hezbollah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.

Salami's letter comes against the backdrop of a series of Israeli-launched terror attacks against Lebanon, which saw the detonation of thousands of wireless communication devices across the country.

Iran was among the few countries to assist those injured in the attack, transferring dozens of wounded individuals to receive treatment in its hospitals.

Salami condemned "the terrorist crime of the occupying regime, which resulted in the martyrdom and mass injury of beloved Lebanese national and Hezbollah fighters."

The commander of the IRGC underlined that such terrorist acts "will soon be met with a crushing response from the Axis of Resistance and we will witness the complete destruction of this cruel and criminal regime."

Praising Sayyed Nasrallah, Hezbollah fighters, and the Lebanese people, Salami pointed to Lebanon's role in supporting Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Salami offered the condolences of IRGC servicemen and the Iranian people to the families of those killed in the Israeli terror attacks and prayed for the quick recovery of the wounded.

"The humiliated [besieged] enemy which is under the daily strikes of the Resistance in the center, north, east and south will get nowhere with the new massive terrorist attacks on Tuesday and Wednesday using pagers and electronic systems against women, men and children of Lebanon."

Earlier on Thursday, Lebanese caretaker Minister of Health Firas Abiad announced on Thursday that the death toll from the telecommunication device explosions over the past two days has risen to 37, with 2,931 people injured.

On his part, Sayyed Nasrallah said that these attacks will not stop the Resistance from supporting the Palestinian people no matter what the consequences may be.

Palestinian Resistance Groups Praise Sayyed Nasrallah Speech

By Al Mayadeen English

Hezbollah leader Sayyed Nasrallah declared earlier today that settlers in northern occupied Palestine will not return to their settlements until the aggression on Gaza comes to an end.

Moments after Hezbollah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah concluded his speech, Palestinian resistance groups issued statements praising Hezbollah for its steadfast support of the Palestinian cause and its dedication to the Palestinian people.

Hamas Movement

In an official statement, Hamas commended Hezbollah's commitment to backing the Palestinian struggle for liberation "until the Nazi-like aggression and genocidal war against Gaza come to an end."

Hamas described the stance of the Lebanese resistance as "a strong blow to Netanyahu and his fascist government, thwarting their attempts to undermine the support for our people and resistance in Gaza." The statement further condemned recent Israeli attacks on pagers and hand-held radio receivers, calling them "brutal" and "terrorist," and noting that the strikes targeted the entirety of Lebanese society.

Hamas emphasized that the escalating violence by "Israel"—including killings, massacres, and acts of genocide against civilians in both Palestine and Lebanon—has "violated all international norms, laws, and principles." It argued that these actions have turned "Israel" into a rogue entity, posing a real threat to both regional and global security. Hamas called on the international community to condemn, isolate, and prosecute the leaders of "Israel" for their crimes.

The statement also reiterated Hamas' admiration for Hezbollah's sacrifices and active role in the al-Aqsa Flood operations, emphasizing that "the immense sacrifices and the pure Lebanese blood spilled over the past year intertwine with the struggle and blood of the Palestinian people, as both march together on the path to liberating al-Quds, al-Aqsa, and all of Palestine."

Palestinian Islamic Jihad

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) expressed deep appreciation for Sayyed Nasrallah's speech, stating that his stance strikes a blow against attempts to isolate Gaza and weaken the Palestinian resistance. The movement emphasized that Nasrallah's firm position, following "Israel's" attacks on Lebanon, underscores the unity and resilience of the resistance across various fronts.

Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) echoed these sentiments, commending Nasrallah's firm message that the Lebanese resistance would persist until the aggression on Gaza ends. The PFLP described Nasrallah's words as "a pledge of loyalty and determination to support the oppressed Palestinian people and their courageous resistance."

The PFLP further noted that Nasrallah sent a clear message to "Israel," affirming that there will be no peace in the northern occupied territories until the aggression on Gaza ceases. Nasrallah also reassured the public that the structure of the Lebanese resistance was strong and steadfast, and would not be weakened by criminal bombings. The resistance's ability to confront any escalation or aggression on Lebanon, he said, is only growing stronger.

The PFLP added that Nasrallah's speech reflects confidence in the resistance's ability to withstand strikes, continue developing its capabilities, and learn from "Israel's" treacherous and widespread bombings.

Popular Resistance Committees

The Popular Resistance Committees (al-Nasser Salah al-Din Brigades) expressed their appreciation for Nasrallah's reaffirmation of the Arab and Islamic commitment to continue supporting the Palestinian people and their resistance despite the brutal massacre carried out by "Israel" against the Lebanese people.

The Committees also agreed with Hezbollah's understanding that "Israel" makes no distinction between Lebanese and Palestinians, civilians or resistance fighters, stressing that the only way to confront "Israel's" barbarism was through continued resistance until the aggression and genocide in Gaza are permanently halted.

The Committees further noted that Nasrallah's message delivered a firm warning to "Israel" and its leadership, making it clear that the various fronts cannot be separated, no matter the scale of the atrocities committed.

Sayyed Nasrallah Challenges Netanyahu to Return Settlers to North

By Al Mayadeen English

Hezbollah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah underlines that the Israeli occupation's goals will falter no matter the course of action it takes.

Hezbollah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah on Wednesday offered his condolences to the families of those martyred or wounded in the deadly attack involving pagers rigged by the Israeli occupation. Sayyed Nasrallah referred to the incident as a "major terrorist operation, an act of genocide and massacre," amounting to a "declaration of war."

The attack, which involved the detonation of thousands of pagers, was conducted "without regard for any regulations or morals," according to Sayyed Nasrallah. Over two days, the Israeli enemy sought to kill more than 5,000 people "in two minutes without regard for anything," he said. He further condemned the indifference shown by the attackers toward the civilian locations where many of the individuals carrying the devices were present.

The Resistance leader stressed that the aggression resulted in "dozens of martyrs, including women and children," with thousands more wounded. "The real scale of the aggression will show with time," Sayyed Nasrallah underlined.

In his remarks, the Hezbollah chief highlighted the meticulous planning of the attack, explaining that the enemy had rigged 4,000 pagers with the clear intent of killing 4,000 people in a single minute. Despite the severity of the attack, many injuries were fortunately minor, with a number of pagers out of service or not distributed at all at the time of the explosion, as he revealed.

Sayyed Nasrallah described the assault as a "grand terrorist operation" and addressed the second attack that saw the Israeli occupation detonating thousands of handheld radio receivers, or walkie-talkies, labeling it a second attempt by the Israeli occupation to kill thousands. He expressed gratitude for the efforts made by the people to mitigate the severity of the injuries.

"We have formed investigative committees and are closely examining all possible scenarios, hypotheses, and possibilities," Sayyed Nasrallah said. He added that the investigation will scrutinize every aspect of the attack, from the factory where the devices were produced to how they ended up in the hands of the users, with the end goal of reaching a definitive conclusion.

"There is no doubt that we were subjected to a major blow on a security and humanitarian level that is unprecedented in the history of our Resistance," he said. "We were dealt a major blow, but that is war. We acknowledge that the enemy has technological supremacy, especially as it is backed by the United States and the collective West."

"We will grow more steadfast and determined to overcome all perils, and it is of great importance that such blows do not undermine our will," he said. He also praised the effectiveness of the Lebanese front in pressuring the Israeli occupation, as evidenced by its recent actions and statements.

Northern front bane of 'Israel'

Sayyed Nasrallah continued by emphasizing the effectiveness of the Northern Front. "The enemy labeling the situation in the north as the first historic defeat for 'Israel' is further evidence of our front's effectiveness," he declared. Moreover, he noted that the mobilization of Israeli forces in the north highlights the "grave threat it faces on this front," which he described as one of the most important fronts in the ongoing regional war of attrition.

"The enemy has admitted to losing the North, forcing [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu and [Security Minister Yoav] Gallant to find a solution to the predicament constituted by the northern front," Sayyed Nasrallah added, underscoring the front's role in the ongoing war of attrition. According to the Resistance leader, this front serves as "one of the most important trump cards in the hands of the Palestinian Resistance in the negotiations to halt the aggression on Gaza."

Nasrallah also revealed that Hezbollah had faced "paramount pressures and numerous threats" aimed at halting operations on the northern front, with the detonation of communication devices over the span of Tuesday and Wednesday being a part of these efforts. "We were informed through numerous official and unofficial channels on Tuesday of the need to stop supporting Gaza and firing into 'Israel' from the north," he stated. However, he affirmed Hezbollah's resolve, saying, "We must not succumb to these threats nor halt our support for Gaza."

The Hezbollah leader also warned that the Israeli occupation's actions would further exacerbate the displacement of settlers from the north and reduce the possibility of their return. "What you are doing will increase the displacement of your displaced settlers from the north and will bar the opportunity of their return," he warned. He also reaffirmed Hezbollah's commitment to supporting Gaza, the West Bank, and the Palestinian people, declaring that the Resistance "will ensure that the enemy fails to achieve its goals."

Nasrallah praised the high spirits and steadfastness of those wounded in the Tuesday and Wednesday attacks, emphasizing their resolve to return to the battlefield. He also noted that the Israeli occupation had aimed to "destroy the Resistance's infrastructure and affect as many leaders as possible while causing paramount chaos and weakness, which it failed to achieve."

Israeli leadership leading it to abyss

Addressing the broader strategy of Israeli leadership, Sayyed Nasrallah questioned Netanyahu's ability to resolve the displacement crisis in the north, stating, "Can Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu return the settlers to the north? We are taking this on as a challenge knowing full well they can't, regardless of the course of action they take."

He pointed out that the only way the enemy could return the displaced settlers would be to halt the aggression on Gaza and the occupied West Bank. Sayyed Nasrallah vowed that the Lebanese front would not cease its operations until the aggression ends, "regardless of the prospective sacrifices and repercussions."

Sayyed Nasrallah then criticized Israeli military strategy, particularly the suggestion by the northern command to establish a security belt. "The foolish commander of the northern command's suggestion to establish a security belt is making us hope they do go ahead with it so that their tanks would be easier to hit," he remarked. He added that Hezbollah was "thoroughly looking for their tanks" and welcomed any such movement, viewing it as a "golden, historical opportunity" to strike.

"If the enemy establishes a security belt, it must understand that it will be ambushed and the zone will turn into a swamp and a quagmire in which it will be mired," Nasrallah warned. "The retaliation the Israelis will face will remain a well-kept secret within our closed circles, and they will hear nothing of it until the time comes."

Sayyed Nasrallah criticized the leadership of Netanyahu and Gallant, accusing them of "egoistical, chaotic, and foolish leadership" that would "lead the occupation into the abyss and the collapse of the third tempele."

The Resistance leader pledged that the Israeli occupation would face a resounding act of retaliation in both predictable and unforeseeable manners. "The response will be just and perplexing."

Death Toll from Israeli Terror Attack Rises to 37; 3,000 Injured

By Al Mayadeen English

Caretaker Minister of Health Firas Abiad praised the swift medical response, noting that dozens of doctors and hundreds of nurses worked overnight in operating rooms, performing 955 surgeries.

Lebanese caretaker Minister of Health Firas Abiad announced on Thursday that the death toll from the telecommunication device explosions over the past two days has risen to 37, with 2,931 people injured.

In his press statements from Beirut, Abiad commented on the explosions that occurred on Tuesday and Wednesday in various regions of Lebanon as a result of booby-trapped pagers and two-way radios.

The minister reported that Wednesday's explosions alone resulted in 25 deaths and 608 injuries, 61 of which are critical. He also mentioned that the initial attack on September 17 left 12 dead and 2,323 wounded.

He praised the swift medical response, noting that dozens of doctors and hundreds of nurses worked overnight in operating rooms, performing 955 surgeries.

He further noted that the bombings showed "the cohesion of the Lebanese people in different regions in confronting the event."

The minister also acknowledged ongoing initiatives from Arab countries to provide medical assistance, though he did not specify which nations were involved.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah reported 38 of its fighters killed in the explosions and vowed retaliation against the Israeli regime, pledging a "just retribution" while continuing military operations in support of the Gaza resistance.

Bulgaria, Hungary, Taiwan, Japan all Dragged into Israeli Terror Plot

By Al Mayadeen English

Bulgarian security agencies are investigating the involvement of a company suspected of supplying explosive-laden pager devices to Lebanon.

The Bulgarian State Agency for National Security (DANS) is working alongside Bulgaria's Ministry of Interior to investigate a company tied to the sales of wireless telecommunications devices (pagers) to the Islamic Resistance in Lebanon - Hezbollah.

Earlier on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Israeli regime had set off thousands of explosive-laden non-wired communication devices including pagers and walkie-talkies across Lebanese territories. The result was a large-scale Israeli-commissioned terror attack that led to the martyrdom of 37 people and the injury of nearly 3,000 others.

DANS explained in a statement that authorities have not detected the "suspected shipments of paging devices" in Bulgarian territory.

Bulgarian media outlets reported that a Sofia-based company, under the name "Norta Global Ltd", facilitated the sale of the wireless communication devices, which were used as a tool of terror in Lebanon.

The case has involved multiple entities in various countries so far, including Taiwan, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Japan, pointing to the complexity of the premeditated Israeli terrorist activities.

In Taiwan, where the pagers were initially suspected to have been manufactured, manufacturer Gold Apollo said the pagers were produced and developed by a European company hours after the attack.

"The pagers were both developed and produced abroad, so they have nothing to do with Taiwan," CEO Hsu Chin-Kuang said on Wednesday.

He also said that about three years ago, Gold Apollo signed a cooperation agreement with a European company, which was only involved in distributing Gold Apollo products at first, but later began independently developing the pagers involved in the blasts.

Farther east, Japanese company Icom, responsible for the manufacturing of walkie-talkie devices, said that it cannot confirm whether or not it signed off on the shipment of wireless products that blew up in Lebanon.

It also said that it had discontinued the product, the IC-V82, 10 years ago.

In a similar context, security sources told Al Mayadeen that the pager devices were rigged at the source with an integrated circuit and explosive materials that cannot be detected with "standard testing equipment."

"The available detection devices and even those [on an international scale] and in international airports could not uncover the planted explosive material due to complex techniques used in this operation," the sources explained.

Sanaa Denounces Starlink Use, Says it Will Harm National Security

By Al Mayadeen English

An official from the Yemeni Communications Ministry has warned against a plot by the Saudi-backed government to deploy Stalink services in Yemen.

Yemen's Sanaa government has condemned the activation of Starlink services in the country, the Yemen News Agency (SABA) reported on Wednesday.

The company, owned by tech tycoon Elon Musk, announced on Wednesday that it will provide its fast-speed internet connections via low-orbit satellites.

In response, an official in Yemen's Communications Ministry told SABA that the ministry said that the plan will gravely threaten the country's national security and Yemen's societal fabric.

The plan commissioned by the Saudi-backed government, which Sanaa describes as mercenaries, attempts to secure the interests of foreign powers in the country, the source explained.

"This behavior clearly confirms the disdain of the mercenaries for the sovereignty and independence of Yemen and their willingness to harm the security and stability of the country in favor of foreign powers, so it was not surprising that the decision was welcomed by the Americans," the official told SABA.

The official also underlined that Starlink's services in Yemen "undermines the (authorities') ability to protect the privacy of citizens and their data," according to the Yemeni news agency.

Moreover, the ministry warned all citizens against using the services, saying that its use its deployment is illegal, holding the Saudi-backed government responsible for any consequences.

In early May this year, news outlets reported that the Saudi-backed government was nearing a licensing deal with Musk's Starlink.

Starlink has only been allowed to deploy its services in a few areas across West Asia including in occupied Palestine after being granted permission by the Israeli regime.

It is worth noting that Yemen has been subject to US-backed aggression for nearly 10 years, which has only recently fallen back. Now, Yemen is dealing with a direct US-UK-led military aggression against it, which has attempted to stop Yemen's support for the Palestinian people.

A Tunisian Presidential Candidate Sentenced to 20 Months Vows to Campaign from Prison

By BOUAZZA BEN BOUAZZA and SAM METZ

1:08 PM EDT, September 19, 2024

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) — One of the candidates challenging Tunisian President Kais Saied in the country’s presidential election next month has been sentenced to prison on fraud charges that his attorney decried as politically motivated.

Two weeks after his arrest, a court in the city of Jendouba handed down a 20-month sentence for Ayachi Zammel on Wednesday evening, after convicting him of falsifying the signatures he gathered to file the candidacy papers needed to run for president. Zammel faces more than 20 charges in jurisdictions throughout Tunisia, including four that will be heard on Thursday.

The little-known businessman and head of Tunisia’s Azimoun party is one of two candidates challenging Saied in the North African nation’s Oct. 6 election.

His attorney Abdessattar Messaoudi said Zammel planned to conduct his campaign from behind bars.

“This is no surprise. We expected such a ruling given the harassment he has been subjected to since announcing his candidacy,” Messaoudi told The Associated Press.

Tunisia’s election authority, ISIE, said Thursday that Zammel’s imprisonment wouldn’t affect his eligibility to run. Zammel will appear on the ballot alongside Saied and the only other approved candidate, Zouheir Maghzaoui, a former Saied supporter whose pan-Arabist party Echaab party was previously close to the president.

Zammel is among a long list of Saied’s opponents who have faced criminal charges and prosecution in the volatile period leading up to October’s election. In July, a court sentenced presidential candidate Lotfi Mraihi to eight months in prison on vote buying charges and banned him from politics. Last month, courts sentenced two candidates — Nizar Chaari and Karim Gharbi — on similar signature fraud charges.

Over 50 countries go to the polls in 2024

After a court required Tunisia’s election authority to reinstate three candidates who had been ruled ineligible to run, one of them — Abdellatif El Mekki — was arrested on charges that stemmed from a 2014 murder investigation that critics have called politically motivated.

Saied’s two most prominent critics, the right-wing Free Destourian Party’s Abir Moussi and the Islamist party Ennahda’s Rached Ghannouchi, have also been in prison since last year.

Civil liberty advocates have decried the crackdown as a symptom of Tunisia’s democratic backslide. Amnesty International this week called it “a clear pre-election assault on the pillars of human rights and the rule of law.”

Why is Congo Struggling to Contain Mpox?

By RUTH ALONGA, CHINEDU ASADU and GERALD IMRAY

2:12 AM EDT, September 19, 2024

KAVUMU, Congo (AP) — Health authorities have struggled to contain outbreaks of mpox in Congo, a huge central African country where a myriad of existing problems makes stemming the spread particularly hard.

Last month, the World Health Organization declared the outbreaks in Congo and about a dozen other African countries a global health emergency. And in Congo, scientists have identified a new strain of mpox that may spread more easily. It has reached areas where conflict and the displacement of a large number of people have already put health services under pressure.

Overall, Congo has more than 21,000 of the 25,093 confirmed and suspected mpox cases in Africa this year, according to WHO’s most recent count.

Has Congo seen cases of mpox before?

Yes, Congo is one of the African countries where mpox has been endemic for decades.

Mpox, once known as monkeypox, comes from the same family of viruses as smallpox but causes milder symptoms such as fever. People with more serious cases can develop skin lesions. More than 720 people in Africa have died in the latest outbreaks, mostly in Congo.

Mpox is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can spread to humans from infected animals. In the global mpox outbreak of 2022, the virus spread between people primarily through sex and close physical contact.

In September 2023, mpox spread to Congo’s eastern province of South Kivu; it had previously been seen in the center and far west. Scientists then identified a new form of mpox in South Kivu that may be more infectious.

The WHO said that from the outbreak in South Kivu, the virus spread among people elsewhere in the country, arriving in neighboring province North Kivu. Those two provinces — some 2,000 kilometers (1,240 miles) from the capital, Kinshasa — face escalating violence, a humanitarian crisis and other issues.

What are the problems in eastern Congo?

More than 120 armed groups have been fighting each other and the Congolese army for years in the eastern part of the country over the control of minerals. That has forced millions of people fleeing violence into refugee camps or nearby towns.

That means mpox is hitting already-stretched health facilities. Dr. Musole Mulambamunva Robert, medical director of the Kavumu hospital in eastern Congo, said it is “truly a challenge” — sometimes treating as many as four times the facility’s capacity for patients.

With more than 6 million displaced people in the east, authorities and aid agencies were already struggling to provide food and healthcare, while fighting other diseases such as cholera. Many people have no access to soap, clean water or other basics.

Some eastern Congo communities are out of reach of health clinics — roads are unreliable, and hourslong risky boat trips are sometimes the only means of transport, said Mercy Muthee Lake of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent.

People can be more susceptible to severe mpox cases because of malnutrition and undiagnosed HIV, she said.

She also said health workers in eastern Congo have requested more mpox training as medications to treat fever and ease pain run out.

Health authorities “are up against it because it’s such a complex area,” said Chris Beyrer, of Duke University’s Global Health Institute.

What about vaccines?

Africa has no capacity to produce mpox vaccines. Around 250,000 doses have arrived in Congo from the European Union and the United States, and more are expected. Congolese authorities say they need around 3 million vaccines. It will likely be weeks before any vaccines reach people in eastern Congo.

For now, the vaccine is approved only for adults. There’s limited evidence of how it works in children.

Vaccines are desperately needed, but they’re just “an additional tool,” said Emmanuel Lampaert, the Congo representative for Doctors Without Borders. The key, Lampaert said, is still identifying cases, isolating patients, and executing grassroots health and education campaigns.

Local conditions make that trying — Lampaert noted it’s almost impossible to isolate cases among poor, displaced people.

“Families with six to eight children are living in a hut, which is maybe the space of the bed we are sleeping in,” he said. “So, this is the reality.”

Why are critics blasting the mpox response?

Unlike the millions of dollars that poured into Congo for Ebola and COVID aid, the response to mpox has been sluggish, many critics say.

Health experts say the sharp contrast is due to a lack of both funds and international interest.

“Ebola is the most dangerous virus in the world, and COVID wiped out the world economy,” said professor Ali Bulabula, who works on infectious diseases in the medical department at Congo’s University of Kindu. “While mpox is a public health emergency of international concern, there is a lack of in-depth research and interest in the virus, as it’s still seen as a tropical disease, localized to Africa with no major impact on Western economies.”

A Gold Mining Town in Congo Has Become an Mpox Hot Spot as a New Strain Spreads

By SAM MEDNICK

8:21 AM EDT, September 19, 2024

KAMITUGA, Congo (AP) — Slumped on the ground over a mound of dirt, Divine Wisoba pulled weeds from her daughter’s grave. The 1-month-old died from mpox in eastern Congo in August, but Wisoba, 21, was too traumatized to attend the funeral.

In her first visit to the cemetery, she wept into her shirt for the child she lost and worried about the rest of her family. “When she was born, it was as if God had answered our prayers — we wanted a girl,” Wisoba said of little Maombi Katengey. “But our biggest joy was transformed into devastation.”

Her daughter is one of more than 6,000 people officials suspect have contracted the disease in South Kivu province, the epicenter of the world’s latest mpox outbreak, in what the World Health Organization has labeled a global health emergency. A new strain of the virus is spreading, largely through skin-to-skin contact, including but not limited to sex. A lack of funds, vaccines and information is making it difficult to stem the spread, according to alarmed disease experts.

Mpox — which causes mostly mild symptoms like fever and body aches, but can trigger serious cases with prominent blisters on the face, hands, chest and genitals — had been spreading mostly undetected for years in Africa, until a 2022 outbreak reached more than 70 countries. Globally, gay and bisexual men made up the vast majority of cases in that outbreak. But officials note mpox has long disproportionately affected children in Africa, and they say cases are now rising sharply among kids, pregnant women and other vulnerable groups, with many types of close contact responsible for the spread.

Health officials have zeroed in on Kamituga, a remote yet bustling gold mining town of some 300,000 people that attracts miners, sex workers and traders who are constantly on the move. Cases from other parts of eastern Congo can be traced back here, officials say, with the first originating in the nightclub scene.

Since this outbreak began, one year ago, nearly 1,000 people in Kamituga have been infected. Eight have died, half of them children.

Challenges on the ground

Last month, the World Health Organization said mpox outbreaks might be stopped in the next six months, with governments’ leadership and cooperation.

But in Kamituga, people say they face a starkly different reality.

There’s a daily average of five new cases at the general hospital, which is regularly near capacity. Overall in South Kivu, weekly new suspected cases have skyrocketed from about 12 in January to 600 in August, according to province health officials.

Even that’s likely an underestimate, they say, because of a lack of access to rural areas, the inability of many residents to seek care, and Kamituga’s transient nature.

Locals say they simply don’t have enough information about mpox.

Before her daughter got sick, Wisoba said, she was infected herself but didn’t know it.

Painful lesions emerged around her genitals, making walking difficult. She thought she had a common sexually transmitted infection and sought medicine at a pharmacy. Days later, she went to the hospital with her newborn and was diagnosed with mpox. She recovered, but her daughter developed lesions on her foot.

Nearly a week later, Maombi died at the same hospital that treated her mother.

Wisoba said she didn’t know about mpox until she got it. She wants the government to invest more in teaching people protective measures.

Local officials can’t reach areas more than a few miles outside Kamituga to track suspected cases or inform residents. They broadcast radio messages but say that doesn’t reach far enough.

Kasindi Mwenyelwata goes door to door describing how to detect mpox — looking for fevers, aches or lesions. But the 42-year-old community leader said a lack of money means he doesn’t have the right materials, such as posters showing images of patients, which he finds more powerful than words.

ALIMA, one of the few aid groups working on mpox in Kamituga, lacks funds to set up programs or clinics that would reach some 150,000 people, with its budget set to run out at year’s end, according to program coordinator Dr. Dally Muamba.

If support keeps waning and mpox spreads, he said, “there will be an impact on the economy, people will stop coming to the area as the epidemic takes its toll. ... And as the disease grows, will resources follow?”

The vaccine vacuum

Health experts agree: What’s needed most are vaccines — even if they go only to adults, under emergency approval in Congo.

None has arrived in Kamituga, though it’s a priority city in South Kivu, officials said. It’s unclear when or how they will. The main road into town is unpaved — barely passable by car during the ongoing rainy season.

Once they make it here, it’s unclear whether supply will meet demand for those who are at greatest risk and first in line: health staff, sex workers, miners and motorcycle taxi drivers.

Congo’s government has budgeted more than $190 million for its initial mpox response, which includes the purchase of 3 million vaccine doses, according to a draft national mpox plan, widely circulating among health experts and aid groups this month and seen by The Associated Press. But so far, just 250,000 doses have arrived in Congo and the government’s given only $10 million, according to the finance ministry.

Most people with mild cases recover in less than two weeks. But lesions can get infected, and children or immunocompromised people are more prone to severe cases.

Doctors can ensure lesions are clean and give pain medication or antibiotics for secondary infections such as sepsis.

But those who recover can get the virus again.

A new variant, a lack of understanding

Experts say a lack of resources and knowledge about the new strain makes it difficult to advise people on protecting themselves. An internal report circulated among aid groups and agencies and seen by AP labeled confidence in the available information about mpox in eastern Congo and neighboring countries low.

While the variant is known to be more easily transmissible through sex, it’s unclear how long the virus remains in the system. Doctors tell recovered patients to abstain from sex for three months, but acknowledge the number is largely arbitrary.

“Studies haven’t clarified if you’re still contagious or not ... if you can or can’t have sex with your wife,” said Dr. Steven Bilembo, of Kamituga’s general hospital.

Doctors say they’re seeing cases they simply don’t understand, such as pregnant women losing babies. Of 32 pregnant women infected since January, nearly half lost the baby through miscarriage or stillbirth, hospital statistics show.

Alice Neema was among them. From the hospital’s isolation ward, she told AP she’d noticed lesions around her genitals and a fever — but didn’t have enough money to travel the 30 miles (50 kilometers) on motorbike for help in time. She miscarried after her diagnosis.

As information trickles in, locals say fear spreads alongside the new strain.

Diego Nyago said he’d brought his 2-year-old son, Emile, in for circumcision when he developed a fever and lesions.

It was mpox — and today, Nyago is grateful health care workers noticed his symptoms.

“I didn’t believe that children could catch this disease,” he said as doctors gently poured water over the boy to bring his temperature down. “Some children die quickly, because their families aren’t informed.

“Those who die are the ones who stay at home.”

Israel Bombs Lebanon, Claims it Thwarted Assassination Plot

September 19, 2024 at 10:57 am

Smoke rises as Israeli attacks continue on the border line in southern Lebanon, on September 18, 2024 [Ramiz Dallah/Anadolu Agency]

Israel bombed southern Lebanon on Thursday and claimed that it had thwarted an Iran-backed assassination plot, a day after explosions of Hezbollah radios followed blasts in booby-trapped pagers, killing 20 people and setting the foes hurtling towards war, Reuters has reported.

The sophisticated attacks on communications equipment used by Hezbollah have sown disarray in Lebanon, and are increasingly viewed as heralding a return to all-out war. Israel last invaded Lebanon in 2006, but continues to occupy Lebanese territory and bombs its northern neighbour frequently.

Hand-held radios used by Hezbollah detonated on Wednesday across Lebanon’s south in the country’s deadliest day since cross-border fighting erupted between the militia and Israel in parallel with Israel’s Gaza genocide nearly a year ago. A day earlier, hundreds of pagers — used by Hezbollah to evade mobile phone surveillance — exploded simultaneously, killing 12 people including two children, and injuring nearly 3,000.

Israel has not commented directly on the attacks, but multiple security sources have said that it was carried out by its spy agency Mossad. It has become customary for Israel neither to confirm or deny responsibility for such murderous attacks.

Israeli security services said on Thursday that they had arrested an Israeli citizen last month on suspicion of involvement in an Iranian-backed assassination plot. The businessman with connections in Turkiye had attended at least two meetings in Iran, allegedly to discuss assassinating Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the defence minister or the head of the Shin Bet spy agency.

Overnight, Israeli jets and artillery hit multiple targets in southern Lebanon, said the Israel occupation forces. Air strikes hit Hezbollah targets in Chihine, Tayibe, Blida, Meiss El Jabal, Aitaroun and Kfarkela in southern Lebanon, as well as a Hezbollah weapons storage facility in the area of Khiam.

Israeli media reported that a number of Israeli civilians had been wounded by anti-tank missile fire from Lebanon, but there was no official confirmation of any casualties.

On Wednesday, Hezbollah fired around 20 projectiles into Israel, most of which were intercepted by air defence systems without causing any injuries, said the occupation state.

Israel and Hezbollah have been exchanging cross-border fire in parallel with the genocide being committed by Israel in Gaza. The occupation state has killed at least 41,000 Palestinians since 7 October last year, mainly women and children, and wounded more than 95,500 more. An estimated 11,000 Palestinians are missing, presumed dead, under the rubble of their homes and other civilian infrastructure destroyed by Israel.

Tens of thousands of people have had to flee the on both sides Israel-Lebanon border. Netanyahu vowed on Wednesday to return evacuated Israelis “securely to their homes”.

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said yesterday that the war was moving into a new phase, with more resources and military units being deployed to the northern border. According to Israeli officials, the forces being deployed there include the 98th Division, an elite formation including commando and paratroop elements that has been fighting in Gaza.

World Reacts to UN Vote Calling on Israel to End Palestinian Occupation

UNGA resolution, backed by 124 countries, makes it clear that occupation ‘cannot be allowed to continue any longer’.

19 Sep 2024

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) overwhelmingly adopted a resolution calling for an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories within a year and the imposition of sanctions for non-compliance.

UN member states passed the nonbinding resolution on Wednesday, with 124 votes in favour, 14 against and 43 abstentions, the Palestinian delegation heralding the adoption as “historic”.

The measure isolates Israel days before world leaders travel to New York for the UNGA, with six days of speeches from world leaders kicking off on September 24.

Here are some of the reactions to the vote from countries and international organisations:

Palestine’s ambassador to the UN

Riyad Mansour called the vote a turning point “in our struggle for freedom and justice”.

“It sends a clear message that Israel’s occupation must end as soon as possible and that the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination must be realised,” he said.

Israel’s ambassador to the UN

Danny Danon slammed the vote as “a shameful decision that backs the Palestinian Authority’s diplomatic terrorism”.

“Instead of marking the anniversary of the October 7 massacre by condemning Hamas and calling for the release of all 101 of the remaining hostages, the General Assembly continues to dance to the music of the Palestinian Authority, which backs the Hamas murderers,” he said.

Palestinian Authority

PA President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed the resolution and urged countries across the world to take steps to pressure Israel to adhere to it.

“The international consensus over this resolution renews the hopes of our Palestinian people – who are facing a comprehensive aggression and genocide in Gaza and the West Bank, including Jerusalem – to achieve its aspirations of freedom and independence and establish a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital,” he said.

Hamas

The Palestinian armed group said it “welcomes the adoption”, adding that it reflected “the international community’s solidarity with the Palestinian people’s struggle”.

Israel

Oren Marmorstein, spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said on X that the resolution was “a distorted decision that is disconnected from reality, encourages terrorism and harms the chances for peace”.

United States

The US mission to the UN called the resolution “one-sided”, pointing to its failure to recognise that Hamas, “a terrorist organization”, still exerts power in Gaza and that Israel has a right to defend itself.

“This resolution will not bring about tangible progress for Palestinians,” the US said. “In fact, it could both complicate efforts to end the conflict in Gaza and impede reinvigorating steps toward a two-state solution, while ignoring Israel’s very real security concerns.”

Qatar

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that the adoption of the resolution by a majority of 124 countries clearly reflected the justice of the Palestinian cause, representing broad international recognition of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination as a natural, legal and historical right.

The ministry voiced hopes that all countries would comply with their obligations under international law and implement the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.

Gulf Cooperation Council

Jasem Mohamed al-Budaiwi, the secretary-general of the GCC – which includes Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates – welcomed the UNGA’s call on Israel to end its occupation of Palestine.

He said it confirmed “the right of the Palestinian people to reclaim their occupied lands” and showed that Israel’s actions, including the expansion of settlements, lack recognition at regional and international levels.

Organization of Islamic Cooperation

The OIC, which comprises 57 mostly Muslim-majority states, said the decision by the UNGA “expresses the international consensus” on the Palestinian right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent and sovereign state, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa.

It also called on the global community to “take individual and collective measures” to ensure that Israel complies with its obligations under international law.

European Union

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in a statement: “The UN General Assembly has forcefully reaffirmed its commitment to the realisation of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, including its right to an independent and sovereign State, living side by side in peace and security with Israel, in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly.”

Amnesty International

Secretary-General Agnes Callamard said the resolution “makes crystal clear” that Israel’s 57-year occupation “cannot be allowed to continue any longer”.

“For decades Israel’s unlawful occupation has brought injustice, bloodshed and suffering to Palestinians on a mass scale. Over the past 11 months, the systematic human rights violations that are a hallmark of Israel’s brutal occupation and system of apartheid have drastically intensified,” she said, adding that Israel should comply with the resolution immediately by withdrawing its forces from the occupied West Bank and Gaza and removing its settlers from the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Human Rights Watch

Louis Charbonneau, UN director at the international human rights group, said: “Israel should immediately heed the demand of an overwhelming majority of UN member states.”

Israeli Attack on Lebanon Has No Strategic Impact: NYT

By Al Mayadeen English

According to analysts who spoke to The New York Times, the attack on Lebanon has not diminished the frustration among Israelis.

According to analysts who spoke to the New York Times, the Israeli pager attack on Lebanese civilians “has no clear strategic goal.”

Twelve people were killed and at least 2,800 others were injured on Tuesday after pagers simultaneously went off and then detonated across the country.

Analysts stressed that the aggression "had no clear strategic impact," as it did not change the military balance along the Lebanese-Palestinian border, where operations continue as they have been since the beginning of the war on Gaza.

The NYT added that the aggression was only a display of"'Israel's" technical prowess and did not diminish the frustration among Israelis, as Hezbollah remains on the northern border, preventing tens of thousands of settlers from returning.

Miri Eisin, a former senior Israeli intelligence officer, affirmed that "not a single Hezbollah fighter is going to move because of this," for capabilities do not equate to strategy.

Hezbollah's response 'inevitable'

Following the Israeli terror attack on Lebanon, Hezbollah issued a statement holding the occupation fully responsible and vowing to respond in ways and at times it cannot estimate or anticipate.

The Lebanese Resistance extended "the highest expressions of congratulations and deepest condolences to the honorable families of the martyrs who fell yesterday," whether from the targeting on the southern front in the towns of Blida and Majdal Selem, or "the martyrs who were killed in the treacherous and widespread aggression through the bombing of communication devices [pagers]."

The statement also wished the wounded a speedy recovery.

In a statement issued by Hezbollah's Military Media, the Resistance reaffirmed its commitment to "continue, today as on all previous days, its blessed operations in support of Gaza, its people, and its Resistance, as well as to defend Lebanon, its people, and its sovereignty."

This ongoing effort, they stated, is separate from "the severe reckoning the enemy must face for the massacre it committed on Tuesday against our people, families, and fighters in Lebanon."

The Islamic Resistance emphasized that what happened yesterday will have "a separate and forthcoming reckoning, God willing."
