Bombing kills 5 in Damascus

A bomb attack in Damascus has killed at least five people in the latest in a series of bombings targeting Syria over the past few weeks.
The attack, which occurred late on Monday, targeted a restaurant in the neighborhood of Qaboun, which has been the scene of many anti-government demonstrations, Syria’s official news agency SANA reported on Tuesday.
Earlier on Monday, another bomb attack in the northwestern city of Idlib led to the closure of an international road leading to the Syrian-Turkish border.
The bombings have even increased since a UN-backed truce came into effect in mid-April and UN observers arrived to monitor the ceasefire on April 16.
Earlier this month, 55 people were killed and about 400 others were injured in two bombings near a military intelligence building in Damascus.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has said that al-Qaeda is responsible for the deadly bombings.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011. While the West and the Syrian opposition say the government is responsible for the killings, Damascus blames “outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest and insists that it is being orchestrated from outside the country.
