African Union (AU) leaders have encouraged the parties to the Republic of South Sudan ceasefire to work diligently to implement the agreement. The dissident forces have already accused the government of President Salva Kiir of violating the truce although Juba has denied the allegations.
Nine people have been killed in clashes between security forces and anti-military government forces in the North African state of Egypt. The day of unrest follows a series of bomb explosions in the capital marking the third anniversary of the uprising in 2011 that led to the removal of former President Hosni Mubarak.
A leading Muslim politician has been killed in the capital of the Central African Republic. The killing took place amid ongoing unrest between supporters and opponents of the ousted regime of interim President Michel Djotodia. A new president was appointed in an effort to calm the situation. Catherine Samba-Panza, the former mayor of the capital of Bangui, was elected by the interim governing council and sworn into office.
Finally, the military interventions in Africa by France have been supported in an editorial published on Friday Jan. 24 in the Washington Post. The editorial also encouraged the United States to support and back up such efforts, which they have been doing anyway.
