Developing Munitions Industry for Self-Defense
Today the DPRK demonstrates its dignity and might as a world-class military power no enemy dare provoke.
The Korean people recollect with deep emotion the proud history of the development of the munitions industry for self-defence under the wise leadership of the peerlessly great men.
In his early years when he embarked on the revolutionary struggle, President Kim Il Sung felt keenly the importance of the might of arms.
After the liberation of the country, he designated the site for a munitions factory, the first of its kind in the country’s history, and led the efforts to create self-supporting defence industry on the basis of the experiences gained in manufacturing self-made weapons during the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle.
The international situation aggravated by endless military provocations of the US imperialists and the development of the Korean revolution in the early 1960s demanded that great efforts be directed to increasing the self-supporting defence capability.
The Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962 gave the Korean people a serious lesson that they could not defend their national sovereignty by relying on others.
The Fifth Plenary Meeting of the Fourth Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea held in December that year laid down the line of carrying on economic construction in parallel with defence building.
It was easier said than done for the DPRK to direct great efforts to defence building in parallel with economic construction, as it had just risen from the debris of the Korean war.
However, as it followed the line, it brought about a great upsurge in economic construction and increased its defence capabilities several times.
The great military strength of Korea contributed to preventing war and safeguarding world peace whenever a touch-and-go situation caused by the incidents of the armed spy ship Pueblo and EC-121 spy plane as well as the Panmunjom incident prevailed on the Korean peninsula.
While building up its invincible military strength, the DPRK further promoted socialist construction, firmly defended the gains of the revolution and successfully conducted the work of developing itself into a powerful socialist country, that is independent, self-sufficient in the economy and self-reliant in national defence despite the break-up of the world socialist system.
With keen insight into the lawful demands of the times and developing revolution with far-sighted wisdom, Chairman Kim Jong Il advanced the line of giving priority to the development of defence industry and developing light industry and agriculture simultaneously.
Under his leadership, the work of making the munitions industry Juche-oriented, modern and IT-based was briskly propelled. As a result, the KPA developed into invincible armed forces equipped with modern military hardware and the industry is capable of manufacturing powerful military hardware and combat and technical equipment of the Korean style, including cutting-edge means of attack and defence.
Nuclear tests were successfully conducted, a new era of CNC technology was opened and the overall economy rapidly developed, so demonstrating the validity and vitality of the line of economic construction in the Songun era.
Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un also initiated a new, original and Juche-oriented line of simultaneous promotion.
The March 2013 Plenary Meeting of the Central Committee of the WPK held under the guidance of the Supreme Leader laid down a new strategic line of simultaneously promoting economic construction and the upbuilding of the nuclear forces in conformity with the lawful demands of the developing revolution and the situation of the country teetering on the brink of nuclear war owing to the frantic US manoeuvres.
That he presented this strategic line when the US was forcing the DPRK to abandon its nuclear programme while threatening its sovereignty was a historic event which is unthinkable with normal courage or grit.
He continuously visited places for developing nuclear weapons and rocket launching stations and worked heart and soul, teaching the developers the key to success. Thanks to his energetic leadership, the munitions industry of the DPRK is capable of producing any powerful Juche-oriented strategic weapons. The DPRK has further enhanced its strategic position as the Juche-oriented nuclear power, proved once again the completely changed international military dynamic structure and created a springboard for attaining the final goal of perfecting its nuclear forces through two rounds of successful test launch of ICBM and ICBM-ready H-bomb test.
As they are led by Kim Jong Un, the peerless statesman and military commander, the Korean army and people are confident of their final victory.
