Statewide Organizers Conference for a Moratorium Now! on Foreclosures and Evictions Will Convene December 6 in Downtown Detroit

An important gathering will take place on Saturday, December 6, from Noon-4:00 p.m., at Central United Methodist Church in downtown Detroit. This event represents a culmination of activities over the last year to win a moratorium on foreclosures and evictions in the state of Michigan.

We are not satisfied with the current measures being discussed in the state legislature which would only create a half-hearted delay for 90 days for those facing the loss of their homes. We demand that Gov. Granholm exercise her executive powers to declare an economic state of emergency enacting an automatic freeze on all foreclosures, evictions and utilities shut-offs in Michigan.

The Moratorium Now! Coalition to Stop Foreclosures and Evictions also supports the passage of Senate Bill 1306 which would impose a two-year halt to foreclosues in Michigan. With hundreds of thousands of households facing eviction, there is no other reasonable solution to this crisis other than the imposition of a moratorium.

At the December 6 conference in Detroit we will discuss the following issues: The fight for a moratorium on foreclosures in Michigan and nationwide; the demand for emergency relief for the working people and poor; we will also develop action proposals for future demonstrations in Detroit, Lansing and other areas around the state.

This event is free and open to the public. All people genuinely concerned about halting the epidemic of foreclosures that are wrecking the state and the country, should come to the conference prepared to organize for real change.

The demand for a moratorium on foreclosures will become even more pressing with the threatened bankruptcy of the auto industry and the predicted loss of 3 million jobs throughout the United States. Our slogan is: "Bail Out the People, Not the Banks!" The trillion dollar taxpayer subsidy to Wall Street should be returned to the people of the United States to create jobs, quality education, universal healthcare, affordable housing and utilities services for all.
