Six Al-Shabaab commanders have been killed after Kenyan troops attacked the militia's base in Tatar town, Somalia Tuesday.

"Today (Tuesday) 17 0830 hrs KDF gunships attacked Tatar town destroying Al-Shabaab command centre and a logistic base. 6 commanders were killed in the attack, 2 technicals one fitted ZU anti air gun and a lorry destroyed," said military spokesman Emmanuel Chirchir on Twitter.

The town is North of Hayo.

The latest attack comes days after Kenyan fighter jets dropped bombs on two Al-Shabaab bases in southern Somalia as the military operation to defeat the militants entered its fourth month.

The bases targeted in the Sunday attacks were in Jilib town, the militants’ last defensive position before the port city of Kismayu.

Kenyan troops crossed into Somalia on October 16 accusing the militants of being responsible for a series of attacks on tourists on the Kenyan coast and the general insecurity in the region.

The troops have since "liberated" several towns in Southern Somalia but the ultimate aim is to capture Kismayu, regarded as the nerve centre of Al Shabaab’s operations in the region.

Fighting alongside KDF are fighters from the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and lately Ethiopian troops.
