The New York Police Department (NYPD) has been monitoring Muslim students at New York University and at least 14 other colleges all over the northeast US, far beyond its jurisdiction.
NYPD trawled Muslim student websites every day and even sent an undercover agent to a school, where he noted in police intelligence files how many times Muslim students prayed.
Undercover agents recorded students' and professors names in reports prepared for New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, though none were charged with any crime.
The newly acquired documents by the Associated Press shows how NYPD has monitored Muslim student groups. The revelation has outraged faculty and student groups.
The universities monitored by The NYPD included, the University of Pennsylvania, New York University, Clarkson University, the Newark and New Brunswick campuses of Rutgers, and the State University of New York campuses in Buffalo, Albany, Stony Brook and Potsdam, Queens College, Baruch College, Brooklyn College and La Guardia Community College.
“We believe we are doing what we have to do, pursuing to the law to protect the city, the city that’s been attacked successfully twice and had 14 plots against it,” NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly said.
In recent months, the AP has revealed secret programs the NYPD, built with help from the CIA, to monitor entire Muslim neighborhoods, collecting information on the daily activities of Muslims such as eating and praying which are all behavior protected by the First Amendment of the US constitution.
It should be noted that the NYPD is not the only institution discriminating against Muslims, the FBI has its own ethnic mapping program that spies on Muslim communities, especially prayers and other community leaders.
