The head of Hamas’ military wing Ahmed al-Jabari has been killed in an Israeli attack on the besieged Gaza Strip.
Jabari, the commander of Izzeddin Qassam Brigades, was killed when his car was hit by an Israeli airstrike on Wednesday.
Israel's Shin Bet domestic intelligence service has claimed responsibility for the attack, saying that it had killed Jabari because of his decade-long anti-Israel activities.
"During a joint operation of the General Security Service (Shin Bet) and the IDF today, Ahmed al-Jabari, the senior commander of the military wing of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, was targeted," a statement from the Shin Bet said.
He is the most senior Hamas official to be killed since an Israeli offensive in Gaza four years ago.
At least nine Palestinians have been killed and over 20 injured in the Israeli operation "Cloud Column."
Shortly after the attack, an Israeli official said that Jabari's assassination in the Gaza Strip was not the end of Israel's assault on the coastal Palestinian territory and more strikes would follow.
Israel also says over 20 sites in Gaza have been targeted in its fresh round of violence against the coastal enclave.
Meanwhile, Izzeddin Qassam Brigades announced that Israel opened gates of hell to itself by killing Jabari.
Islamic Jihad has also said that by killing Jabari, Israel has declared war on Gaza.
According to the latest reports, missiles have been fired from Gaza to Sderot and Ashkelon in Israel.

Israeli forces have launched a fresh airstrike on the northern Gaza Strip as Tel Aviv intensifies its attacks on the blockaded Palestinian enclave.
The strike occurred late on Wednesday night, shortly after the military wing of Hamas, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, said they had fired a homemade missile into Tel Aviv.
At least ten Palestinians, including senior Hamas commander Ahmed al-Ja’bari, were killed in Israeli airstrikes on the besieged Gaza Strip on Wednesday.
Ja’bari - the most senior Hamas official to be killed since Israel’s invasion of Gaza in late 2008 - died after the car he was traveling in was hit by an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City.
Two children and a woman are also among the victims of Israel’s deadly raids, which the Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine described as a declaration of war.
The Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades also stated that Israel opened gates of hell for itself by killing Ja’bari.
Tel Aviv's attacks drew a fiery response from Palestinian resistance movements, who fired dozens of rockets at Israeli settlements in Negev, leaving several Israelis injured.
Hamas also announced that it has hit Tel Aviv with a homemade rocket, prompting Israelis to declare a state of alert.
Rockets fired from Gaza also hit an area near Israel's Dimona nuclear facility. It is the first time that Palestinian rockets have reached the area.
Israeli drones and warplanes continue to target the long-blockaded Gaza Strip, while an Israeli official has said that Ja’bari's assassination was not the end of Tel Aviv's assault on the coastal sliver and that more strikes would follow.
The Israeli military has also said that it is prepared for a ground operation in Gaza "if necessary."

Egypt has recalled its ambassador to Israel in protest over Tel Aviv’s latest deadly airstrikes on the besieged Gaza Strip.
On Wednesday, Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi ordered to "recall Egypt's ambassador to Israel," the president’s spokesman Yasser Ali said in a statement broadcast on state television.
"President Mohamed Morsi has followed the Israeli brutal assault in which a number of martyrs and sons of the Palestinian people were killed," Ali added.
"On this basis he has recalled the Egyptian ambassador from Israel; has ordered the Egyptian representative at the United Nations to call for an emergency meeting at the Security Council," the statement said.
Morsi also asked the Foreign Ministry to summon Israel's ambassador to Cairo over the assaults and demanded an emergency Arab League ministerial meeting in Cairo to discuss the Israeli attacks.
Israel's Ambassador to Cairo Yaakov Amitai left Egypt after President Morsi announced he was summoning him.
"On behalf of the Egyptian people, the president gives his condolences to the Palestinian people over their martyrs," Ali said.
Earlier in the day, Egyptians held an anti-Israeli demonstration at Cairo's Tahrir Square, calling on the country to recall its ambassador from Tel Aviv following the deadly Israeli airstrikes.
On Wednesday, Israel unleashed a major military operation against the Gaza Strip, killing ten people including senior Hamas commander Ahmed al-Ja'bari.
Twenty Palestinians were also injured in the Israeli attacks. Two children are among those killed in the strikes, according to Gaza's health ninister.
Tel Aviv continues to attack from the air and the sea and has even called up its reserve troops for a possible ground invasion.

The Palestinian Authority (PA) calls on the United Nations Security Council to take action against Israel, which has launched a deadly offensive in the besieged Gaza Strip, and stop its aggression against Palestinians.
On Wednesday, the Israeli military launched a series of new air and sea attacks, dubbed as Operation Pillar of Cloud, against the Palestinians of the coastal territory. The offensive left at least ten Palestinians dead, including senior Hamas commander Ahmed al-Jabari, the head of Izzeddin Qassam Brigades.
Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian Authority ambassador to the UN, said the Israeli offensive amounted to "illegal criminal actions."
In a letter to Indian Ambassador Hardeep Singh Puri, the president of the Security Council this month, Mansour said that a "message must be sent to Israel to cease its military campaign against the Palestinian people under its occupation, including the cessation of extrajudicial killing."
"This escalation, which continues at this moment, demands the attention of the international community, including the Security Council, with the aim of averting the further deterioration and destabilization of the situation on the ground and the fueling by Israel of yet another deadly cycle of violence and bloodshed," the Palestinian Authority envoy added.
"We want the Security Council to act in accordance with its responsibilities to stop this aggression against our people," he stated.
On Monday, Israeli Minister for Military Affairs Ehud Barak said that Tel Aviv was mulling over various options to punish the Palestinians of the coastal territory and had not ruled out the possibility of launching a new war on Gaza.

Egyptian president condemns deadly Israeli attacks on Gaza

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi has condemned Israel’s deadly attacks on Gaza Strip, which have killed at least 9 Palestinians including the head of Hamas military wing, Ahmed al-Jabari.
Egypt has demanded an immediate end to Israeli airstrikes, saying it is considering recalling its ambassador to Tel Aviv.
Egypt's Islamist Freedom and Justice Party, the political arm of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, also slammed the airstrikes against Gaza, saying Cairo would no longer tolerate such attacks on Palestinians.
The FJP has urged the Egyptian president to review all ties with Israel, adding that the attacks by Israel required “swift Arab and international action to stop the massacres.”
The Egyptian Health Ministry also called on Morsi to annul all pacts with Israel.
Egypt's Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr condemned the attacks, warning Israel that an escalation in its violence would threaten regional stability.
Jabari, the commander of Izzeddin Qassam Brigades, was killed when his car was hit in an Israeli airstrike on Wednesday. Several children have been also reportedly killed in the attack.
