Sudan, South Sudan Express Hopes of Progress At the Next Round of Negotiations

11 December 2012

The Republic of the Sudan and the Republic of South Sudan have expressed their hope that they will reach on an agreement on the implementation of cooperation deals signed by the two sides in Addis Ababa.

The two countries have asked the African Union to help the two sides to work on the practical details of withdrawal of troops from their disputed border as proposed by mediators and as agreed by the two sides. Defence Ministers from both countries made this statement on Monday following week-long negotiations in Khartoum.

During the negotiations, both sides said withdrawal of their respective troops from the disputed common border was necessary to resume oil exports but failed to reach an agreement on how to do this. Sudan's Defence Minister, Abdel Raheem Mohammed Hussein, said the two sides "will meet in Addis Ababa on [December] 15th to continue dialogue on how to implement the cooperation deals" signed recently by both sides in Addis Ababa.

South Sudan's Defence Minister, John Kong Nyuon, said some "issues" remained unresolved, and expressed his hopes of a successful outcome of the next round of talks to be held in Addis Ababa and brokered by AU mediator Thabo Mbeki. Oil production was originally scheduled to start on Nov.15.
