This week's edition of the Pan-African Journal reported on the health condition of former South African President and leader of the African National Congress (ANC), Madiba Nelson Mandela. Mandela, 94, has been released from hospital after another bout with pneumonia. He is now reported to be in a stable condition under home health care.

The newly self-appointed leader of the Central African Republic (CAR) Michel Djotodia has said that he will abide by the political demands of the Central African Economic Community (CEEAC) and the African Union (AU) to hold elections in eighteen months. Djotodia, the leader of the Seleka rebel group, seized power two weeks ago from the former leader Francois Bozize.

There have been clashes between Mozambican authorities and the former rebel group Renamo resulting in five deaths.

The fighting took place in the town of Muxungue after police raided a Renamao office. Renamo, which for years had been backed by the former racist apartheid regime, has for nearly two decades participated in elections and the political apparatus of the Southern African country.

The Southern African state of Zimbabwe has scoffed at remarks by a U.S. diplomatic official related to elections taking place inside the country. The U.S. is attempting to monitor the upcoming harmonized elections scheduled for July. A proposition rejected by ZANU-PF.

Finally, there was a tribute to the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who was assassinated forty-five years ago in the city of Memphis, Tennessee.
