FAWU Warns Farm Bosses of Further Strike and Protest Actions in the De Doorns Area in South Africa

FAWU warns farm bosses of further strike and protest actions in the De Doorns area

7 May 2013

The Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU), held an intense meeting with its members and interested workers in the De Doorns area on Monday (06th May 2013) evening. During the meeting several complaints emerged, with the most concerning being the reported use of labour brokers to undermine current workers on farms, in particular the targeting of FAWU union members.

It appears that farm owners have waited until the "season ended" in order to embark on this "cleansing process" of workers, especially those known to have been vocal in their demands for a living wage.

The farm bosses appear to be side-lining permanent workers in favour of labour-broker supplied workers, for all off-season work, in what appears to be a process that will ultimately replace them.

This move has fuelled more frustrations and, if unresolved, it will leave us with no choice but to embark on protected strikes and other lawful protest actions. We will engage relevant farm bosses and try resolved the matter within the next 10 days.

Failure to reach resolution, we will allow our members and interested workers to embark on strikes and other protest actions in pursuit of their interests and rights.

We hope that farm bosses will assist us in avoiding the need for such actions by coming to the negotiations table and by using permanent workers for off-season work as well as ceasing to utilised labour-broker supplied workers.
