Anti-United States demonstrations have taken place in South Africa amid the visit of President Barack Obama. Pickets were set up outside the U.S. embassy in Pretoria as well as locations in Cape Town where demonstrators denounced Washington's policies in Africa, Cuba, Palestine, Afghanistan and violations of human rights inside America.

Political tensions have escalated inside the North African state of Egypt where there have been clashes between supporters and opponents of the Muslim Brotherhood government of President Mohamed Morsi. June 30 will represent the first anniversary of the presidency of Morsi which was met by anti-government demonstrations.

The trial of George Zimmerman is still underway in Sanford, Florida. Zimmerman is accused in the killing of 17-year-old African American Trayvon Martin in 2012. The case has drawn international attention.

Finally, the U.S. Supreme Court has handed down two major decisions related to the political and social status of African Americans. One case related to affirmative action will still maintain barriers for people of color in education and employment while another ruling struck down the enforcement provision of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
