Nelson Mandela's body was transported after lying in state for three days to the Eastern Cape city of Umtata. From Umtata a convoy carried the coffin to his home village of Qunu.
An all night vigil was held in Qunu and on Sunday December 15 the state funeral took place with 4,500 people in attendance. The funeral was held inside a rapidly constructed marquee near the burial ground.
This broadcast contains interviews with people inside the country who gave their responses to the legacy of Mandela and the nature of the mourning and celebration of his life.
Speeches are carried from the memorial featuring former Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda and Mandela's comrade from the Rivonia Treason Trial, Ahmed Kathrada.
The memorial services and other tributes paid to Mandela were some of the most widely covered public and private events in world history.
