February is African American History Month in the United States where the contributions of peoples of African descent are recognized in culture, history and academia. The commemorations began in 1926 as Negro History Week and was extended to Black History Month five decades later in 1976.
Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe was elected as Deputy Chair of the African Union (AU) at their 22nd Summit held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Mugabe in an address to the continental organization said that Europe must keep its dirty hands off of Africa.
An United Nations envoy is visiting the Republic of South Sudan to hold further discussions to solidify the ceasefire between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and ousted Vice-President Riek Machar. Since Dec. 15 thousands of South Sudanese have been dislocated in the fighting that began within the presidential guard in the capital of Juba.
Finally, clashes in the Central African Republic have resulted in the deaths of 43 people. Despite the selection of a new interim government, violence is continuing inside the mineral-rich state.
