Private Radio Station Looted in South Sudan
August 21, 14 (JUBA) – A private radio station operating in Jonglei state capital Bor has been raided, with radio equipment, office computers and other furniture stolen during the robbery.
Radio Jonglei is the only radio station still operating in Bor after rebel forces were overran by government troops in the region.
It is the sixth time its office has been targeted by looters since its establishment in 2010.
Police are yet to arrest any suspects in connection to the latest incident.
Malek Gut-nyin, the station’s managing director, said two desktop, computers, a radio mixer and two telephones were among the items stolen.
Gut-nyin told Sudan Tribune by phone from Bor that looters had broken two doors to enter the office before stealing the equipment.
In a separate incident in April last year, two printers, five telephones, two laptops computers and one desktop computer were stolen.
No-one was arrested in connection to the incident, despite the Bor police unit pledging to investigate.
“Last year, it (looting) happened many times, so we are using the police to
secure our equipment,” said Gut-nyin, adding that the latest incident occurred despite the presence of a police officer who was on duty at the time.
Meanwhile, security officers in Bor have pledged to track down the culprits and bring them to face justice.
