Chinese Leaders Urge All-out Efforts to Save Injured in Tianjin Blast

BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang have urged all-out efforts to save the injured and minimize casualties in the Tianjin blast.

In an instruction, President Xi ordered local authorities in Tianjin to spare no effort to treat the injured, search for the missing and contain the fire. Xi and Li also commanded a work group led by Public Security Minister Guo Shengkun to direct rescue operation and emergency response.

The blast, which occurred at a warehouse in the north China port city on Wednesday night, has killed 17 people and injured more than 400 as of Thursday morning, according to rescuers.

In the instruction, Xi noted that the cause of the fire must be found out, family members of the victims should be taken good care of while public order should be maintained. Xi added search and rescue missions must be carried out in an appropriate way to guarantee the safety of the rescuers.

Xi also urged governments at all levels to draw a lesson from the accident, insist on the paramount interests of the people, carry out safety checks, enhance their management of dangerous chemicals, ensure production safety and protect the people's lives and property.

Premier Li urged authorities to intensify search and rescue. He required that the injured should be treated properly to minimize death from injuries.

Li also vowed thorough investigation in the accident and ensure open and transparent information disclosure to the public.

TIANJIN, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Two firefighters were "out of contact" and another four injured as of 3:00 a.m. Thursday after an explosion ripped through a warehouse in north China's Tianjin City, according to police authority.

According to the Sina Weibo post of the firefighting bureau under the Ministry of Public Security, The Tianjin firebrigade sent 12 teams after receiving fire report from Ruihai warehouse at the Binhai New Area at 10:50 p.m. Wednesday, which stores dangerous and chemical goods. An explosion occurred at the site at 11:30 p.m. The brigade then sent another nine teams and 35 fire engines as reinforecement.

The shockwaves were felt kilometers away, with some residents claiming their window glass and fish tanks shattered. People in neighborhoods nearby said flames lit up the sky and the blasts with big bang sent smoke and dust dozens of meters into the sky.

Lu Yun, head of the nearby Taida Hospital, said they have received more than 50 wounded people, and more are coming. The injuries were mainly from broken glass or stones. Some of the injuries are serious.

The rescue operation is still going on.

According to the company's official website, Tianjin Dongjiang Port Rui Hai International Logistics Co. Ltd. was founded in 2011 and is a storage and distribution center of containers of dangerous goods at the Tianjin Port.

The company's business includes the storage, transfer, distribution and customs declaration of dangerous chemicals. Freight volume through the company stands at one million tonnes each year, with annual revenues exceeding 30 million yuan.

The center includes two warehouses for dangerous goods. One is located next to an office building.

Executives of the company have been controlled.
