Thousands of Women Arrive to Hear Zuma's Speech

Sasolburg - It was a morning of waiting in long queues in the hot Free State sun for the thousands of women streaming into the Harry Gwala stadium in Sasolburg for President Jacob Zuma's Women's Day address on Sunday.
An Umkhonto we Sizwe compilation CD belted out the song Malibongwe, which refers to the saying "You touch a woman you touch a rock".
Women waited in lengthy queues for security checks and another to receive a food parcel. This included a cabbage, an orange and some potatoes.
Vendors did brisk trade with items ranging from handmade pumps to sunhats, all in the ANC"s colours.
While Women's Day is celebrated internationally in March, in South Africa it is on August 9 to mark a massive protest to the Union Buildings by thousands of women against pass laws, which determined where black South Africans could be.
"It is a big day to remind us, and tell women today that women were fighting for freedom," said Emma Nkosi, who was selling handmade ANC-branded items.
Earlier, a GCIS co-ordinator said Zuma had started the day with a political meeting at the local council.
When Zuma's delegation arrived they sat on leather armchairs on stage a long distance from those who had arrived for the event.
Zuma is also expected to release the first government report on the status of women in South Africa.
